Just get a dualshock 4 wireless dongle and it should be plug in and play!

(it would also work with micro usb cable)

an xbox one controller with xbox wireless adapter would probably be easier to set up. (just plug in and play)

Get  A bluetooth adapter, pair the ps4 controller up. Open steam big picture, go to settings, controller settings and turn on ps4 configurator support.
Turn off and turn back on the controller, congratz, it now works in all games. And for non steam games, just add them to steam and done.
You can then configure it like a steam controller per game, or just use it as a standard controller.

If you don't have bluetooth adapter just use a  USB cable.
I use both and all is fine.

Edit, DS4Windows is also more than capable, in fact more capable than the steam configurator way, as you don't have to add the games to steam and you can play UWP games with ii.
I prefer the steam way though as it gives me more control and allows you to rebind the buttons. But when things don#t work out right, I fall back on DS4windows.

There is nothing wrong with ds4windows. I actually wish all controllers had such in depth software. You won't need ds4windows for steam though. You'll need it for non steam games.
