GTX 1070 for 1080p?

LyricalRain018

Hey guys i plan to build a pc for 1080p gaming. Once built, i am not going to upgrade it for 4.5-5 years. So should i get the gtx 1070? Because i think the 1060 ir rx 480 will last for 2-3 years max.

A 1060 and RX480 will last much longer than 2-3 years if you just lower settings as needed. There's plenty of older cards that still cope with today's games.

A 1070 is a good choice for 1080p though, it will last quite a while.

I have a 1070 and it has handled every game I've thrown at it at max settings 60FPS in 1080p. It even does ok with The Witcher 3 in 1440p but mostly stays in the 40-60fps range at that res. That's with settings maxed though. But at 1080p the 1070 kills it even on Max settings.

the 1070 should be a safe bet, since you don't know if you're upgrading to 1440p down the road (maybe in 4 years you decide it's worth it :)), and the 1080p FPS will stay relevant for quite a while :)

I am going to completely skip 1440p. I'll be getting 4K when it becomes the norm. Till then, 1080p is great.

Is a 1080p 60Hz monitor okay for a 1070? Or is 144hz compulsary? Cause i prefer ips over tn panel

if your getting more than 60hz it is worth it.

also consider getting the zotac gtx 1070 amp extreme!

it has the best air cooler and it can oc to an almost gtx non oc 1080 performance

i have it and its the best. i also have 1080p and i am planing for 4k. my fans almost never spin up when am playing ultra 74 fps locked (i oc my monitor from 60 to 74). also while streaming and recording with nvenc the same time. when i get a 4k i will oc but for now i am ok i just increased the power and temp limit

I'd never keep 1070ish performance for 1080p 60fps, it would feel like a huge waste right now, at least for me. 1080p 144Hz or 1440p 60Hz/144Hz are much better for such a GPU. It won't be enough to drive 1440p for ages, but right now it's perfect.

CPU : i7 8700k @5GHz, GPU : ASUS GTX 1080 Ti STRIX, RAM : 2x8Go 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance, MB : ASUS Prime Z370-A, PSU : CM V850, Case :  NZXT S340, CPU Cooler : NZXT Kraken x62, Monitor : Acer Predator XB271HU 27" 1440p 165Hz, OS : Windows 10 Home 64 bits

I want to keep the card for 5 years

You can't just plan to keep a GPU for that long and know exactly what it'll do and what you'll end up wanting imo. There are too much variables. Of course a 1070 should be powerful enough for 1080p 60fps in a couple of years. But look at Kepler cards (780 Ti comes to mind). With the drastic architectural changes of Maxwell over Kepler, Nvidia abandoned drivers for the 700 series and they are now worthless. Who would have thought this back in the days ? However, a GTX 980, soon to be 3 years old GPU, is still kicking ass for 1080p 60+fps no problem in most newer titles.

My point is, buying a GPU/CPU should be about your needs short term (1-2 years max), because you can't predict further than that. Right now, I think a 1070 is perfect for 1080p 144Hz and 1440p at the refresh rate you prefer. Playing only 1080p 60 fps with a 1070 is missing out on a lot the GPU can offer (higher refresh and/or crispier resolution). If you're afraid it won't hold for 5 years at 1440p (which is probably right), just go for 1080p 144Hz, it will be perfect for years to come.

1070 is a 1440p card you should go for 1060 or RX 480 and save some cash. I was in the same position you are a few weeks back, went with rx 480.

you can get an ultrawide monitor like https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BFH194W/ref=twister_B01D1J1A2I?_encoding=UTF8&th=1 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BFH1FL4/ref=twister_B01D1J1A2I?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
