Could I potentially damage something?

I want to capture some dank MIDI's from my old PC, and the only way that I can think of is to run a cable from the line out on it to the line in on my PC. Given that I'd be running it from a SoundBlaster 128 PCI at low volume (a card whose amp is weak as hell compared to the onboard one), would I risk damaging my mobo or no?

won't hurt the board, thats what the line in is for.

You want to record midi? why? Midi is meant to be used to control a virtual instrument. You also won't be able to output midi from anything other than a midi interface, which you won't find adapters for.

You know... MIDI files... those things you can play on modern PC's but they sound like shit because they have to be done with software and not hardware now...

I was just more worried about throwing too much oomph into the port because I'm capturing something from a sound card.

Sound card and onboard will be the same output voltage, assuming same output level.

Trying to record the output of one computer with another is stupid, especially with older hardware, you're going through multiple lossy conversions when you don't need to (midi -> audio stream -> DAC -> analogue  -> ACD -> file). You may even be able to use something like audacity to locally record the audio, which is slightly better.

Look, captain smartass, there's obviously a reason that I want to capture the MIDI from this PC. If I didn't care, I would have already dropped into FL Studio and converted it.

 

So take a few steps back and peel your damn eyes: The reason I'm doing this is because this PC has a nice FM synth in it that makes MIDI's sound really good.

 

If you have another completely idiotic comment to throw, please do so. It amuses me.
