Hello all!

I am looking to build my first computer, and am interested to see if there's anything I am missing/ messing up with the parts I have already chosen. I am looking for this build to crush it at 1080 and 60 at just about anything I throw at it (maybe it's my lack of knowledge on higher resolutions, but I guess I could say that I am completely comfortable hitting 1080 and 60 and being happy with it).  My basis for the build is a YouTuber named BitWit who did this build around September of 2016:

I saw the case and liked the way it looked, so I wanted to stick with that/parts that would fit in that. There are slight differences between the build he put up and the one that I will be putting up now. Please let me know if I have done anything wrong/ have overkilled something/ any advice that may better optimize the build. I know that Ryzen is just around the corner, and am interested in that as well, as I am not looking to build this just yet

(hopefully in a couple of months or sooner). If anyone has any advice for a monitor and keyboard, that would be appreciated as well (I have never used a mechanical keyboard, but I am not opposed to it). Thank you very much!

Ya I'd totally drop to a 480 to get the R7 1700 in 2 days or so, double the cores, and 16 threads

So you already have a display? and it's only 1080p 60hz?

Thanks DeezNoNos! Question: I picked the 1070 here because it seemed to push past the 80-90 fps range on just about everything I've seen. Would it benefit me to pick an RX 480 instead of the 1070 if I'm not looking for much past the realm of 1080/1440?

I'd wait for the GTX 1070 price drop first before you do anything rash tbh

Do you mean that I should wait on the drop rather than subbing out the 1070 for an RX 480, or has there been an announcement recently? Either way, I plan on waiting to build this for a couple of months until my money situation stabilizes.

Question: If I am using this for just gaming, would the 1070 be seen as something of an overkill, or should I look at it more as "very good future-proofing"?

Hey @stealyfill do you think that i can chage the case if it can any recommendations?

There won't be too much of a price drop on the 1070. 1080ti is gonna be $699, a good cheap 1070 is $379 at the moment. 2x 1070's beat a 1080ti in SLI games so Nvidia will make sure that 2x 1070's are more than the ti, same with the 970's and the 980ti

Just to make sure I understood the question, were you asking if you could recommend a different case? If so, I liked the case because of the look and the horizontal motherboard. Do you have a recommendation of something similar?

Then what the budget with a monitor?

The 480 will do perfectly fine at 1080p, and saves you money on a free-sync display

DX12/Vulkan should help the 480 stay relevant for a long while to come

I think I understand. More than likely, I will keep the 1070 in the build. Question:  If I am using this for just gaming, would the 1070 be seen as something of an overkill, or should I look at it more as "very good future-proofing"?

The 1070/1080 price drops will probably happen in a few months, there isn't really a date, but there's a new MSRP so it'll take websites/companies a bit of time to adjust. When it happens a 1070 will probably be somewhere from $299-$349 and a 1080 will be $399

a 1070 would be fine for future proofing, but right now its a 1440p@60hz/1080p@144hz card, a bit overkill for 1080p@60hz with current games

Rx480

well 1080 ultra 50+ fps all games.

1440p high 50+ fps all games

The higher the resolution the lower the cpu stress

I'd like to know what kind of benchmarks you're looking at, even an RX470 can push 60+FPS on 1080p ultra.

No, I want to built a computer  using the same components that you are going to use i just wanted to change the case Phantoms Eclipse Series P400 do you think it would fit ? This is going to be my first computer built too.

I bet the 1070 doesn't drop, it doesn't need to. Like I said above, 2x 1070 need to cost more than a 1080ti which is gonna be $699 so that leaves little room for 1070 price drops. Also there is nothing else in that bracket - 1060 and 480 are still really close, if people wanna go faster they go 1070, or 1080, or 1080ti - Nvidia has it wrapped up in every price bracket - $370, $500 and $700 and still competing $200 - $250

Nvidia already announced It I believe, will drop the 1070 to $350, and the whole line up gets refreshed slightly faster memory, or at least the 1060s do

Oh, understood. I think that it should be fine, but I would recommend going to here "https://pcpartpicker.com/" to make sure. The website lets you make a build/edit a build, and it should be able to tell you if the mATX motherboard fits properly into the Phanteks Eclipse P400 case you are looking to use.

If the 1070 doesn't drop there's no point when you could just buy a 1080 for 40$ more.

1060 gets a 1060ti (sort of lol) along with 1080 getting new GDDR5X. I haven't seen anything reference 1070 price drops other than assumptions
