Hi,

I am looking forward to my first PC build and I would like to go with something cheap, suitable to get my hands on building a PC, overclocking and overall tinkering with the system. At a later point I will upgrade to modern age hardware. For now I plan to do some light to modest gaming on this first build. I found an old Xeon x5650 for around $100 and also DELL PRECISION T3500 with 12 gigs of ram for ~$240. I plan to put the x5650 in there, overclock it to 37-4.0 GHz, replace the PSU with Seasonic M12II-750 and throw in an rx480. I know the mobo only has PCI-E 2.0 and the rx480 is generally meant to be used on 3.0 slots, but it looks like a big part of the internet says that the performance difference in gaming is not that big between 3.0 and 2.0. I only play WoW anyways (I might try some other games as well now :D). Do you think this will work, what will I be giving up and what should I expect from this system? I plan to re-use the PSU and the graphics card in my next build.

Note: One thing that worries me is that I have no idea whether the mobo that comes with the T3500 supports overclocking, so if anybody knows, pls share.

Thanks :)

If you already bought this for 100$ then you got ripped off, they are selling on eBay for 35$

And if you're going used I might as well find the cheapest one I can find on eBay for the DELL PRECISION T3500 with 12 gigs of ram which is 89.99$ buy it now on eBay means you can get it for even lower for the auction ones.

If you've already bought it you got ripped off.

Also if you want to buy a used overclockable Xeon server board it's going to cost you at least 100$. Same price as if you bought a compatible used x99 motherboard to use the Xeon in.

I can almost guarantee any Dell prebuilt's motherboard WILL NOT support overclocking at all.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

omg why did you pay $100 for that CPU.... why?????? its not worth even close to that... atleast the motherboard should support the chip but i doubt you will get much of an overclock because of the VRMs and BIOS limitations. other then that i guess this is an OK plan but i would rather have gone with an X58 8 core and a decent motherboard, sonme cheap ECC RAM and then go from there. this IS x58 but there is no value in that prebuilt for $240 nor that CPU for $100. if you have already paid for all this then fine, go ahead, atleast the rest of your plan was decent

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Lol guys, I have not bought any of the parts yet, chill out :D Thanks for the replies! I am from Bulgaria and the prices here are always higher, because of a lot of taxes. I will however look for a better deal on the processor and then I will try to find the mobo and rest of the parts individually, because it looks like I will be replacing most of the parts in the pre-build DELL anyways. It seems like it is not worth it buying it at all.

One thing I am concerned though is the PSU. Since I will probably want to water cool the system at some point, is 750W going to be enough?

Also, for the initial build I think I will have to find another cooler, because I doubt the default cooler for the x5650 will be ok if I OC to 4GHz, right?
