May I ask for help with a relatively inexpensive i5 build strictly for gaming at 1080p@60Hz? Thank you.

testudo_aubreii

1. Budget & Location

About $1000 USD and USA.

2. Aim

I will be using this for gaming. I may surf, check email and Reddit, but pretty much strictly for gaming at 1080p@60Hz. I will be playing games like Assassin's Creed, GTA, The Witcher, Total War series, Far Cry, Battlefield series...etc.

3. Monitors

I will be gaming at 1080p@60Hz for the foreseeable future. 23"-27" monitor. However, I will not be purchasing a monitor at this point.

4. Peripherals

I will not need any peripherals.

5. Why are you upgrading?

Actually, building a new rig from the ground up.

I am pretty much a novice when it comes to picking compatible parts. That is why I am seeking help here. I will be doing research as I await responses. I am confident, though, that I will be able to put it together.

I stated above that I will be gaming at 1080p@60Hz for the foreseeable future. With that stated, I am all about "future-proofing". I know that word is sometimes not liked, but what I mean is this is a build that I will have for a long time.

I will not be able to upgrade for quite a while. If I have room in my budget, I would shoot for a 1080 GPU. From what I have gathered thus far, an i5 should be sufficient enough for gaming. So, I will not be looking into an i7. I picked 16GB because I have read that RAM is relatively cheap nowadays.

I have no idea what PSU are good and wattage that I should need. Like the PSU, I don't even no where to begin with cases and form factors. I don't want a giant tower, but I would like it to be...anti-dust, if that makes any sense...and somewhat quiet.

I hope that I have provided enough information. Forgive me if I have not, but please let me know if I missed anything.

Thank you in advance for all help, suggestions and advice!

Base it off of an i5 7600k, an RX 480 4gb, and a z270 or z170 board.

An i5 will match gaming performance up to about a GTX 1060 or RX 480.  If you go to a higher tier GPU you will see some mild to moderate CPU bottleneck.  Also, for 1080p 60hz, there is no need for anything beyond a GTX 1060/RX480.

Nope. I would recommend a 7700K as it is the best gaming CPU out there. However, you should wait for Ryzen 5 which will cost like an i5 and perform like an i7-5820K

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Ryzen is a new CPU developed by AMD to compete with Intels flagship CPUs. Were seeing a $499 that has better benchmarks than Intels $1000 one.

Most likely because of its higher frequency though... However, for gaming, Ryzen doesn't make much sense... A 7700K is a better choice for gaming.

Even if your not buying Ryzen there could be a significant price drop on Intel's side.

The Ryzen chip is better for streamers, since it performs jsut about as good as Intel chips in gaming, and the extra cores and threads can go towards the stream. There also priced better and could stir up intels prices. You also need to fit the 7700k in this guys budget and that about $100 more, when he could just overlock the 6600k and be fine for awhile.

When did he say that this PC is for streaming?

6600K with a 1080 is a no go. The i5 is sure to bottleneck it in most CPU intensive games...

Well the 1st chips that will be released definitely don't make sense for gaming. The R5 and lower will be where it's at but unfortunately those are being released later.

@testudo_aubreii how patient are you? Ryzen 5 CPUs are coming in Q2 (anytime from April to June) and will be much better bang for your buck than Intel's current offerings. I'm actually considering selling my set up for an R5 1500.

This or wait for Ryzen. Keep in mind the board would require a bios update. The monitor might be a little smaller then you want but the good thing is that it's a IPS panel.

I hopping on this thread :3 since I'm trying to build a similar price pc. With most news sites guessing a May release for R5, is it still recommended to 'wait for ryzen'? If someone needed to build a PC by end of March, would the performance of a ryzen cpu be worth the wait vs Intel cpu's out now?

"Solus" (2015) - CPU: i7-4790k | GPU: MSI GTX 970 | Mobo: Asus Z97-A | Ram: 16GB (2x8) G.Skill Ripjaws X Series | PSU: EVGA G2 750W 80+ Gold | CaseFractal Design Define R4

Next Build: "Tyrion" (TBA)

Technically he should wait for the Ryzen 5 series to come out. That would be worth the wait, but still the i5 still has a lot of performance and it should last for about 6-7 years.
