780Ti A Good Choice?

Hey All. I'm still low on money and can't work (underage) so I'll be taking a while to get my build done. I'm most worried about what gpu and cpu i should get. But this question is about the 780ti. Is It good? I've seen a few around 180 on ebay australia and That fits for me, I did a comparison to the 970/960 and 1050 Ti on a website, and it seems the 780ti is better... Should I get it or a RX 470/480. I just want something better than my current laptop (check my signature). Thanks in advance for any help.

I would get a 480/1060. Newer, more efficient, longer support, more VRAM

Save up and get an RX 480.  The 4GB version is fine, even the GTX 1060 3GB runs great.  No educated person thinks you have to have 4GB+ of VRAM.

Generally it's a bad idea to get older GPU models, unless you can get them significantly cheaper than comparable new products.

 

In this case, you'd save about $80 AUD getting the 780Ti.  That's not a bad discount and a pretty solid price.  Also a hefty upgrade over your laptop so I think you'll still enjoy it. 

 

You also have to consider your financial situation.  If you're just scraping pennies together, the used market is the way to go.  If you can though, I'd recommend a 290 or 290x over the 780Ti if you can find it for a cheaper or similar price.  Much better bang for the buck for very similar performance and energy usage.  Over the years the 290 is actually a way better card than the 780Ti despite being outperformed by the 780Ti on release.

Basically shop around the used market and find the best deal possible on slightly older high end cards or buy a new entry level to mid range card.  Do not buy older cards in the mid range unless you want to be replacing it in a year or two.  (Even something like a GTX 970 is a really bad buy right now.)

Have you played Rainbow Six? GTA V? Or any other AAA title? Even at 1080p you can push 4Gb+ of VRAM. Also don't get the 3Gb 1060 it is a different card than the 6Gb model and will perform worse.

Of course I have. And take a look at benchmarks. If you'd actually educated yourself on the subject before spouting off nonsense, you'd know that it doesn't actually need that much VRAM.  Just because it can use up to a certain amount of VRAM, that doesn't mean it needs it all at one moment. Everything gets swapped out with the RAM when necessary. Despite the extra CUDA cores and double the VRAM, the 6GB version only performs about 5-10% better on even the most demanding games. All for a 25% price increase.

 

I would still recommend the RX 480 though, because it's cheaper for basically identical performance.

Depends on the games you want to play and res/settings. 780ti is enough for me.

Yea I also have 3 Titan blacks. So I'm sure using a single one on 1440 is gonna be the same as a 780ti, especially when it only runs a little over the base clock.

I wouldn't recommend getting 4gb version as in like 2 years that might not be enough to run some games cause i have a gtx 1070 8gb and when i max out gta 5 it uses like 4gb so it wont be long and youll need more or youll have to turn down your settings some and its not that much more for the extra 4gb  is it really worth saving $40 i dont think so

Lack of VRAM is not that important, i also think 4Gb is enough. Just lower textures if you are having problems.

I play ds3 with a 2Gb card and the VRAM is always full, but i rarely get fps problems (they do occur, but the game does not get unplayable be any stretch).

 

Honestly, the 750ti 2Gb can still run most games TODAY, but people seen to think anything below a rx 470/1050ti is utter crap.

 

If I were you, I would get a rx 470 or 480, because it is not worth to BUY older cards right now. If you had the 780ti already, you could just keep it.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

It's not worth the 25% price hike (if it was only 10% more I'd say hands down get it), and "nice to have" isn't the same as "need to have".  Yes, more VRAM usually translates into better performance.  However, with a 480/1060 you aren't going to running games at levels that need more than 3GB.  Regardless of the VRAM, it's just going to run at super choppy frame rates.

If the 780ti is $180 and the RX480 is $199 there is no reason not to get it
