They have to be from the same chip. For example, you can crossfire an R9 290 and R9 390X because they're both Hawaii chips. Same goes for the 470 and 480, because they're both Ellesmere chips.

Ideally they'd be the same size memory wise as well.

Ok, if you put two RX 460s w/ 2GB VRAM together; how much more performance would you gain over just having only one RX 460?
