I'm looking to upgrade soon, leaning towards 6800k. but Iv'e seen how some xeons out preform other i7's for much cheaper. im curious if there is any xeon that will go toe to toe with the 6800k for both gaming and editing.

"wait for ryzen" fan boys, I KNOW. i am waiting shhhhhh

iirc xeons get rekt in single core thanks to the low clock speed compared to a desktop chip

I'm not a Fan Boy lol, but that is the advice I would offer lol! My last 4 chips have been Intels and that's AMD's own doing as I came from Athlon 64, Athlon 64x2 prior to moving onto  Pentium DC, I7-860, i7-3770k and my current i7 4790k.

As for your original question, I don't see a Xeon beating an unlocked i7 in gaming, the higher core count xeon's tend to have much lower clock speeds and obviously can not be over clocked, we usually recommend them as a solution for people wanting 4c/8t i7's on a budget

If you look at Linus' video on "overclocking" a xeon, it doesn't work too well. Xeons just generally have lower clock speeds than their Core counterparts, it would be good if you wanted to video edit, in which case the higher core xeons would make more sense if you could get them at a fair price.

Gaming wise, no, a xeon will lose against the higher clocked core 7-K skus because of better single threaded speeds.
