I'm planning on building my own storage server and I'm trying figure out the best/cheapest way to do this around 700 or 900 bucks I would like to have at least couple of hard drives 5 to 10 maybe including 1 ssd for the os which would be ubuntu os or windows server 2012 or 2016. just have a backup every midnight backup my important files. I was looking on cases and their is not a lot of cases with hard drive space so I looked at server 4us and I found this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/SUPERMICRO-4U-24-BAY-846E1-R900B-BAREBONE-SERVER-CHASSIS-WITH-24x-TRAYS-/172315518085?hash=item281ece2485:g:z1QAAOSwq19XB8Qf it looks like it will do what i need it to do but if I put everything in that will it get loud? like a dell poweredge 2950? or will it be like a tower with minimal noise. If you have any cases or parts you recommand please post them Thanks

how about a server like this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-PowerEdge-FS12-TY-C2100-2X-QC-E5506-2-13GHz-NO-HDD-12xTRAYS-16GB-4x4GB-/381744926594?hash=item58e1c54f82:g:ankAAOSw5cNYZCO7

normally cheaper faster than a diy

That supermico will work, it will be failry loud, buy quieter than a 2950. Almost all rack stuff is pretty loud. Also those normally need a sas hba/raid card to work

Is the one in the link loud? like the poweredge 2950?

the newer servers are mcuh quieter than a 2950, but still not something id want to have in the same room as me all day.

I have a dell poweredge 2950 and I don't even have it running it just sits under my bed. because it is way to noisy for my house. I had it in the basement and i could hear it all threw my house will that happen to dell poweredge fs12

what is the server for? is it just a file server to run a nightly backup?

It will be for a backup and keeping couple of files on that i use daily. which I can't live without. And they are very important files. which I need to keep secure

do what id did then. You can make then fairly quiet by chucking a 50ohm reistor on all of the fans.

How would I do that? and it will keep the noise really down?

Takes the fans out, cut the red wire, strip it, and solder a 50 or 47ohm reistor in. The fans spin slower now. Temps are only about 5 degrees C higher.

Its pretty quiet.

I have read about that. Will the bios screw up? or make the fans spin up? and where would I get the tools to do that? what if I mess up?

bios doesn't care as the fans are still spinning faster than the warning speed.

You need a soldering iron, wire strippers and a few resistors and some tape to cover the exposed contacts.

If you screw up you can get a new fan(there normally only a few bucks) or just solder the red wire back together

Any brand will be fine, id get 1 watt 47 ohm reistors

Id get something like this http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/yageo/FKN2WJT-73-47R/47.0AUTB-ND/2208223

Also I was talking to a buddy and he said that you fixed that problem but you cause another issue and you have to flash the bios

depends on the fan rpm, but normally there still spinning fast enough to not cause a problem.

Buy a Fractal Node 804, It will fit 10 hard drives and 2 SDD's

I am running one with 8 HDD's and 2 SDD's as a 24x7 database and backup target in one of our branch offices.

They have good airflow, just full the front and rear fan positions (5 120mm fans and a 140mm fan)
