Really isn't going to matter

probably just plug your CPU fan into the CPU fan header so it can control it's RPM

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Go with what is convenient and makes sense for cable runs, you can indivudally adjust the headers to vary the speed of the fans and control type for 3pin DC voltage control and 4 pin PWM fans respectively.

Plug them into Chassis Fans (CHA_FAN 1 & 2) ideally, although it doesn't really matter.

just plug your CPU fan into the CPU header, and don't plug your case fans into CPU_OPT. (because then they will speed up when your CPU gets hot, which you probably don't want.

if you don't have a splitter, just plug it into EXT_FAN or H_AMP_FAN. doesn't really matter

don't buy a splitter. that's a waste of money.

just plug it into EXT_FAN or H_AMP_FAN

If your using an AiO, get a splitter. Put both fans from the radiator on the splitter & plug that into the CPU_fan header. Then the CPU temp will directly control it's cooling & both fans will be the same speed.

If the pump cable will reach and you'd like to monitor it's speed, go ahead & plug the pump into the AiO pump header.

My system isn't as nice, so For the pump itself, I prefer to get a 12v molex to 4pin adapter. This way the pump is always running at a constant rate, with no variables, (possibly) less wear, and it's not taking up a fan header.

Any remaining case fans can be plugged into remaining headers.

The EXT_FAN header is NOT a regular fan header -- it's not even for a fan.

It is a 5-pin header for the FAN EXTENSION CARD.

This is what that header is for:

The ASUS Strix Z270E doesn't have this PCB included in the accessories -- it is usually only found on higher tier, or premium package motherboards
(e.g. like my ASUS X99 Deluxe II)

You can use any of the other headers that is available

  • CPU_FAN
  • CPU_OPT
  • CHA_FAN1
  • CHA_FAN2
  • H_AMP_FAN
  • AIO_PUMP

You typically want to have SOMETHING connected to the CPU_FAN header because the motherboard is set to check THAT header to see if a CPU cooler / CPU fan is installed.

The H_AMP_FAN header is simply able to supply more current if necessary for high-power fans (this header can provide up to 1A of current).

The AIO_PUMP header is just the "recommended / suggested" header to connect your fan to if you have an AIO cooler; it's just a regular PWM fan header.
