Hello all, so recently I needed a new computer core so I went ahead and order the i7 6800k MSI X99 SLI Plus mobo and 32 gb of ram to go with it for now until I upgrade with 32 more soon, my cooler is an corsair h55 because I found a good deal on it on Amazon.

Does this seem like a decent build? I have been out of the hardware tech scene for over a year now because I have been pouring all my time into a business venture that required me to get better at programming. Then there was 1.5x school course load. Hopefully I got the best build I could for the price. My requirements were 6 core, x99 and 32gb of ram and a cheap cooler, did I do well for that?

I would say that's a solid platform, as the extra cores help with a lot of non-gaming tasks.  How did you come out cost-wise?

Why do you need a 6 core? Is your job video editing or something?

I burst out laughing at this. 16GB is more than you need, and you're considering 64GB? xD

I paid ~$1315 CAD for it all, I used pcpartpicker to find the best deals

I need the ram for VMs, this machine is not for gaming at all. This machine will be using an old GPU mostly just for the extra display outputs. Realize that not all machines are for gaming.

That does make sense. Well you should've said you're going to run VMs. :P

That's fine.

No one in their right mind would want 64gb for gaming. Plus I never mentioned a gpu so should attack that before the ram. GPU for gaming is quite important, though I do plan to upgrade the GPU at some point.

True, I didn't say that though. :P

Sorry, that does make some sense. How many VMs do you plan to run simultaneously though? Anything more than 8GB per VM is a waste.

Likely I will run 10-14 depending on what I am doing. I currently run 6 on a i7 3770 and 32gb of ram

That's going to be tough on a single CPU system, unless you suspend them between uses. You won't even be able to dedicate a single logical core to each one.

I think you should wait a couple weeks for Ryzen. You can get 16 threads that way.

Hardware is bought and I am not replacing it now. Yes but with hyper threading it works fine on 1 thread for what I need as I can run each on its own thread other than the one I am working on which can run on 2 threads so 1 physical core.

I didn't realize it was a hexacore. Even so, that leaves you with 11 logical cores, and the rest of your system trying to run on just one. If you haven't opened everything up, you should take it back.

I am not taking it back, I do not want Ryzen. I am sticking with X99 for now till I upgrade to a proper server in 8 ish months.

Did you want actual input, or did you just want all of us to say that whatever you do is the best decision ever?

I wanted input but don't feel like hearing someone say to return it, I was looking for direct part suggestions as to how I could have chosen a better X99 set up, so better CPU or better MOBO that would meet my requirements not something that fails to meet them like you suggested.

In other words, you wanted to be jerked around.

Your system will perform okay, but will seriously struggle with more than 7 machines. It could have preformed better for a lower price, but if you aren't willing to make changes then there is no point. Goodbye.
