Mhh Check if your Cpu Cooler has to much Dust.

Check with Aida64 and Benchmark how Hot it gets maybe its just because of the Bios.

Does the pump still work, are the fans spinning , can you post a pic of the applied termal paste on the cpu?

The pump should be making a specific low humming noise and have a small amount of vibration when it is turned on, try to listen to it.

the termal paste seems to be aplied propperly, as to why a pump dies all of a sudden can be a lot of things, i think it is bad luck in most cases and accasionaly used abuse.

You did say you only have had the cooler for a few months so if it was bought new you should be able to return it for a new one in the store you bought it if you(or they)have a receipt and the original box.

the pump doesn't die, still working fine

I have no idea what it might be then, maybe you can feel at the tubing and the rad it there is an area where it is suddenly much hotter than just an inch earlier.
