New 7 Install

Go to solution Solved by Delicieuxz,

Check out the resources I've put into this blog post:

Just don't install any non-security updates after June 2015.

I don't know if WU offers non-rollup updates anymore. You might have to use WSUS to get the updates that you want.

And if you have trouble finding updates with WU, check out these resources:

Alright, so I just did a nice clean install of Windows 7 on my pc :) Now I want to run windows update but I don't know which ones I should avoid. ie telemetry updates, updates that break things, unneeded updates etc... Any thoughts on a program that I can run that will scrub through them and only install the so called "kosher" updates since going through each one manually is a huge pain in the ass...

I installed Win7 on my secondary machine earlier this week and did get some non-rollup updates still.  Not too many tho, IIRC the first wave had around 100-110 updates, which is less than half of what it used to be 4 months ago.

This install is only for when my ISP's technicians come over next week (changing plans and need new modem), so I just installed all of the WU filth without even bothering to look at it.

As for avoiding only the non-security updates: keep in mind that they already included Win10 adware in an IE security update (KB3139929, more on that here), so nothing is sacred.

The days of selective updating are basically over, so (at least in terms of spyware) Win7 and 8.1 are just as bad as Win10 now.

Vista is going EOL in 2 months, so that's not really an option anymore either.

Time to move completely ...
