Hi

I have a QNAP TS-251 which I am going to install perhaps in my garage. However, I want to be able to keep it physically safe.

It does have a kensington lock connection but I was looking for something stronger and more secure.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?

Thanks

What exactly are you trying to protect it from? If it's in your Garage, which I assume you keep locked, someone would have to physically break into your home to gain access.

Add a Kensington Security Cable with a heavy-duty pad-lock, and that's already plenty of security.

If you're super paranoid, lock it in a metal cage or a locking steel cabinet, as @JPotze suggested.

Basically from theft yes. My garage is fairly safe and secure but I want to have extra security. Thanks.

If you want extra security, just get a Kensington Security Cable. Seriously, if they gain physical access to the room, they'll get the server one way or another. Whether they need to cut off a security cable, cut through a pad-lock, or cut open a cabinet. It won't take a significantly different amount of time in either of these scenarios.

As quiet and small as that device is, why not just have it physically next to your computer or wireless router (assuming it has spare ethernet ports)?

For some physical security you may spend as much protecting it as the unit itself is worth.

Depending on how much of a DIY'r you are, you could just build a MDF box and stick it inside. I don't think many people would expect tech to sit inside such a box lol. I don't expect it to generate much heat so it wouldn't require much.

You'd need proper ventilation in a box like that. Doable, certainly, but an extra consideration and cost.

I thought about that but I don't believe that nas has a fan to move air, sort of just radiates heat through its plastic shell - already a heat box. Given the low power I wasn't sure if it'd create much heat. I've had laptops inside a closet acting as a firewall and such - never really got more than warm. Although, I was thinking he could use a USB port off of it and splice a 120mm fan into a USB cable. It would only run at 5v but with a large fan it should move more than enough air.

I would personally cut holes for 2x 120mm fans. One intake, one exhaust, and wire them directly up to a speed controller (either controlled by the computer, or via a manual control).
