So I'm doing a virtual build at the moment (stating virtual because it'll be maybe a month or more before I actually make any purchases as I'm also getting a new desk and room needs to be made where it's being setup) whose primary purpose will be a home video editing PC, I'll play games on it sure, but I'm also hoping to be able to try out some other things like After Effects type work and a possible delve into 3D modeling and animation. I'm looking for opinions and such, my concern mostly is on diminishing returns on the ram, cpu, and graphics cards. My budget is 5000 USD although I've got probably an extra 500 in wiggle room. Also this doesn't include the fans I'm planning to use and peripherals because my primary focus is on the major components and most of my peripherals will be carried over from my old build as well as several external drives. Also part of the decision with the specific mobo and graphics card picks are because i intend for this to be a very RGB heavy build. (those two will run coordinated through ASUS Aura, while fans and additional lighting will run through NZXT Hue+, and yes I know, I'm jumping on that band wagon..but i.. i like the pretty lights..)  https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zYzcm8

Ok I think that covers all the bases with what I'm trying to do and what I'd like to hear input on.

why not consider an ultra-wide monitor, those are great for productivity, also I could be wrong but the i7 6800k could be enough and that would be a major save [500ish dollars] which could get you superior bigger panel. I honestly think that resolution on anything smaller than 27 inch is quite useless even if you gonna be working with a lot of zooming on that 3d working.

Awesome, happy to get responses this quick, as to the case, yea..unfortunately i hate to admit the decision came from aesthetics toward the rgb aspect, originally i had looked at the be quiet dark base pro 900 since i had seen so many great reviews, but i wanted the front panel to have some visibility of the fans, but i really like the rest of that case so maybe I'll go back to it. As for the memory.. i might look into more, again i went with the led's for aesthetics, but i might be able to pry myself from that for performance, haha. I'll definitely look into the g-sync on the monitor.. as for the size that's one thing i forgot to put in the original post, i currently have a 23.6 monitor(not 4k, its not great but its worked well for me) and i had planned on doing a dual monitor set up, using one for video preview when editing, and unless i set them up vertically the size difference would drive me nuts, and the 3d modeling is in a sense an after thought, i have no clue how in depth i'll end up going with it since id basically be starting from scratch knowledge wise. That being said there might be something to be said about going with a sole ultra wide monitor..i was more in the mindset of carrying over the one i already had when i was building this.

The 6800k, this and the ram was kinda the direction i was looking for the most advice from, how much actual -noticible- difference would i see in downgrading the cpu, and the same with adding more ram or using a different ddr4 (2400 vs 3000 or something else)

as for how one gets the money for a 5k pc..yeah not really gonna talk about that :P.

also that build is amazing, if you could increase the budget maybe you could go for triple or dual monitors, i only have one monitor but i feel the need to get a second as its really convenient (just a suggestion :))

  • 3 weeks later...

So I hate to necro a post but as I first said this is a multi month research and development conception, and starting a new topic feels just as dumb as necroing, I feel like I'm just about dialed in, this isn't everything but the core stuff is there, https://pcpartpicker.com/list/2Qny9W

And unless rgb corsair ram comes out soon and/or gskill rgb ram goes over 8gb per stick (although its possible corsair will suffer the same limit) about the only thing I'm still up in the air about is the case as @nerdslayer1 suggested I'm looking at the air 540..but I'm also looking at the air 740 and the TT core v71.

Edited: p.s. I decided against going for gsync on my monitors as the price hike wasn't worth what Ive seen as pretty much just a gaming bonus which is not a priority.
