Lmfao - I definitely agree with your sentiment. But fuck that. If it's dangerous for me to drive to work, I'm calling in and taking a paid "personal day" off!

Of course, not everyone has that luxury. If you work hourly for example, there's generally no such thing as a paid day off (sick or otherwise).

In the states hourly gets [depending on the employer] 40-80+ hours of PTO (Paid Time Off) per year. Usually you have to work the first year to get the benefit or in some cases you accrue the time after your first 90 days.

Now is that paid time off for Vacation or for sick days?

Here in Canada (Ontario at any rate, though I'm sure the other provinces have a similar law), it's mandated that you get 4% "Vacation Pay". This can be paid out either per pay cheque, or in one lump sum, at their discretion.

On top of that, they are entitled to 10 days of "unpaid" sick days ("Personal Emergency Days") per year, but only if they are employed by a company that has 50+ employees. Small businesses are exempt from this requirement.

Though lots of places around the world are introducing mandatory paid sick days, Ontario is not yet among them.

PTO is generally for vacation but can be used for sick days but that is your choice really, it is somewhat flexible.

Some employers (usually the larger corps) do offer paid sick days 3-5 but depending on the severity up to a month for hospital stays.

There are some laws that regulate this but nothing that makes it mandatory that am aware of (at least in Iowa) I do know that employers cant simply let you go for to many sick days unless the sick days can be proven to be fake...

Interesting. I'm not a fan of only having one type of leave for both sick and personal time; although I think many places do this. Where I am we earn hours per paycheck rather than having a set number of days per year. 4 hours per pay period if you've been working less than 3 years; 6 hours between 3 and 15 years, and 8 hours after 15 years. You also earn 4 hours a pay period in sick leave regardless of years of service. Additionally, you can get miscellaneous leave such as travel compensatory leave for official travel and administrative leave for things like snow days. No limit on rolling over sick leave (fantastic if you have an accident or surgery) and a limit of 240 hours rolled over for annual leave. Ends up being a lot of use or lose leave for the 15+ year guys.

Well yeah, but it all falls on your employer to make available those benefits though. Anywhere in the US you will most likely accrue some amount of PTO pending on your employers benefit. :)

I assume you're a kid.  Lemme explain something: Adults don't have snow days.  We just take longer to get to work.

Although we do get "Just fuck it"  days, where you wake up an absolutely everything goes wrong within the first hour, so you write off the day and just go back to bed. These days may or may not coincide with adverse weather conditions.

Or maybe that's just me, the joys of being self employed :D

Yeah, it varies employer to employer of course. Being a government job however does make it a bit different where the leave policy is consistent for everyone and you don't start back at 0 if you switch commands.
