ECC ram for personal NAS?

Hey!

 

I was wondering if I needed to get ECC nas for a home/personal NAS, and if so how much do I need it and why? Thank you!

It's not essential, but if the NAS is using ZFS, it can dramatically decrease the chances of data corruption in the event of an error in RAM. Bear in mind the board and CPU both need to support ECC for it to work.

Need? no. Highly recommend? Honestly yes. Just get a platform that supports it and be done.

Oh ok, I thought you needed like 8GB of ram... So I'll be fine if I just use a UPS + 2-4GB of DDR3 ecc ram?
