Pimp my Powermac G5.

Divine_Evil

Hey all, I'm posting the progress on my first ever mod of a case. I'm posting this again from the New Builds and Planning section so that more of the modders out there to see it :). Sorry for the grainy pics, but they are made with my iPhone...

I'm planning on building myself a G5 case modded hackintosh smile.png. This is going to be my second desktop that I will own (the first one was a Duron 800Mhz 128MB RAM, 32MB Riva TNT2 of awesomeness from 2001 wink.png). It lasted me till 2006... But now is 2013 and I need something AWESOME!

I'd like to gather some opinions on the QUITE build I'm planing. I'd like to spend at most a 1000$.

It's a hackintosh so I'll have to go with Intel so don't suggest AMD smile.png...

So here is my build so far:

i5 3570k or i7 3770k

GA-Z77MX-D3H mATX mobo

2x8GB RAM (Any good low profile ram?)

GTX 660Ti or 670

256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD (

2TB WD Green drive I already have...

Seasonic 520W Fanless PSU

Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO

My main concern is the PSU and if it's going to provide enough power to 1 GPU and (in the future a sound card and a raid card), 2 HDD and 2 SSDs, ODD and all the USB peripherals...

Another concern is the cooling... I'll have a total of 3-4 fans in the case. 1 120mm exhaust fan at the back, 1 or 2 CPU fans on the cooler, and the video card fan... Will that provide enough air circulation for the fanless PSU to be cooled?

I'm open also for suggestion for alternatives to all my components...

UPDATE: First of all I've bought the parts and they are:

i7 3770k + Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler

GA-Z77MX-D3H mATX mobo

2x8GB RAM G.Skill Ares 1866 MHz

Galaxy GTX GC 660Ti 3GB

256GB Crucial M4 SSD

2TB WD Green drive I already have...

Seasonic SS-520FL Fanless PSU...

Second I'd like to show you the progress on my G5 case:

And with scuffs like this:

44929d1359486723-g5-white-swan-img_0268.jpg

After powdercoating it white and some small parts black for 12$. It became this!

49370d1363203315-g5-white-swan-img_0300.jpg

and the back with black door lock and black PCI brackets smile.png

49373d1363203343-g5-white-swan-img_0303.jpg

And that is for now... This weekend I plan on putting all the powdercoated parts and do the standoffs for the mobo... wish me luck.

Update March 15th: I started paing all the silver nuts and bolts black... And this is the result smile.png

49580d1363380694-g5-white-swan-img_0308.jpg

And I've put together the side panel. The screws and the plastic parts that the lock hooks attach were painted black smile.png:

Looking niiiice smile.png

Update March 18: I'm done with the spraypainting and if it wasn't for a single standoff to break I would have been done with the gluing the standoffs... And with that I need less than 30 minutes to put the case together and be ready for the PC parts icon_e_smile.gif.

I painted the plastic PCI frame black icon_e_smile.gif... NIIICE result icon_e_smile.gif

I couldnt get anything higher than 10.6 running at the time but people now are reporting they can get 10.8 to work on AMD

I know I can... but there are more resources for intel hackintoshes... And I don't have much time for searching for AMD ones...

  • 1 month later...

Awesome work!  I'm in the mddle of a G5 mod myself.  If you don't mind me asking, where did you get yours powdercoated and for how much?  I've been looking around but most places want me to mail it in (not cheap) and it's then $300 more (at least) for the powdercoating...

hi!

I want to do the same with a G5, but on ebay and others I only find  connectors for front panel of a normal Mac Pro.

Do you have any idea about where to get it?

I'm pretty sure you could have polished that case up instead of painting it and it would have looked like a mirror

it's aluminum right?
