Why I prefer the Logitech G402 mouse to the G502

Delicieuxz

I've used a G402 for some years, and it's a pretty all-around good mouse. It has a good shape for my hand, and it has not too loud mouse-clicking, which I really like. The left-side buttons (not M1) are a bit out of place for my hand, but they're workable. The mouse-wheel doesn't have side-pivoting, but has a decent scroll-feel.

Around Christmas 2016, I bought a G502 mouse at 50% off from NCIX, thinking I would replace my G402 with it. but I returned the G502 after using it for a few hours, and becoming certain that my G402 was more satisfactory and better-performing for me, while also being every bit as functional for me, since I've never needed to use the side-pivot. The reasons why the G502 experience was not as good for me as that of the G402 are these:

- The weight of the G402 is perfectly balanced, but the weight of the G502 is imbalanced - it's heavier at the front, and lighter at the back.
- The scroll-wheel on the G502 kept shifting from side to side with any semi-quick sideways mouse movements, making an awful *thock* sound each time it did. This shifting of the mouse wheel also shifted the weight of the mouse, and threw off the precision of quick mouse movements.
- The mouse-clicks of the G502 are much louder than the G402, and when I got the G402, I was thankful that its mouse-clicks were quieter than those of my previous mouse, the G400. The G502 was just as loud, or maybe moreso, than the G400.
- The bumpy texture on the right-side of the G502 mouse felt uncomfortably harsh against my fingers. The G402 has a smooth side, and I find that much preferable.

- I didn't like the feel of the mouse-wheel or its movement (though, those things were a lesser issue).

What I can say was better with the G502 is that it improved the ergonomics for my hand, compared to the G402, and the left-side buttons were in easier-to-access placements. But, because of the weight imbalance, the loose mouse-wheel, and the textured grip on the right-side of the mouse, it was uncomfortable to handle, and the sound of the mouse-wheel rocking back and forth and the loud mouse-clicks drove me nuts.

If Logitech released the mouse with a properly-fitted mouse-wheel, a front-to-back balanced weight, and none of that harsh-feeling grip on the right-side of the mouse, I would get a G502, because of its great hand ergonomics, and also because of its left-side button placements.

I'm curious to know if all Logitech G502 mice have the issue with the mouse-wheel that I did, that it's loose, and rocks side-to-side when quickly moving the mouse. I don't know how such a flaw can make it into a final mouse design, but there are lots of people's reports online complaining about their G502 mouse doing the same thing.

I think the issue with the scroll wheel was a limited run that Logitech caught quite quickly. Why not send Logitech your feedback and help build the next mouse better than ever.

No knocking on any of my G502s except one.

The scroll wheel of the G502 has some issues (that's why I haven't got one yet), aside from this side-shifting I also read about some "roll-back movement" in free mode which can make scrolling through a web page really annoying (as it will scroll back a little each time).

A french tech blog even made an article about that, asking for user comments on the scroll wheel of the G502 and other Logitech mice. This particular issue seems to have been solved with the G900 as it packs a lighter, hollow scrool wheel, so we can hope for improvements for next generation mice.

Submitted my feedback on the Logtiech help forums: https://community.logitech.com/s/question/0D53100006WOxMMCA1/

If you'd like the points I raised to receive greater attention from Logitech, consider giving the post a like.

Yeah, I think there was some of that, too. I'm amazed that such things actually could make it into a final mouse design, as it spoils the whole experience, IMO, similar to buying a new monitor or TV that has a large discoloured streak on one side of the screen, or that has 20 dead pixels, or which has a noticeable crack in the screen.

That's good to know.

I don't know of the exact scroll noise you are talking about with the G502 but mine has some side to side play which makes a bit of noise when you reach the ends of the movement. I actually fidget with that motion and noise.
