So you're a complete noob when it comes to photos and video?  In that case it doesn't matter which camera, except Canon lenses tend to be a bit cheaper than Sony and they offer a wider range.

Looking at UK prices, you could get a 70D at about the same money as the 760D, so why are you looking at the 760D in the first place?

Of the 2, I'd go with the Canon due to lens availability, they are cheaper and there's more out there, you can also get used lenses which are even cheaper and there are less expensive third party manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and Samyang that make some very enticing lenses for Canon and Nikon DSLRs.

The Sony and Canon seem pretty much the same on paper, but the Canon system is much more complete and tbh, the features the a68 does have, like the better (on paper, I haven't actually seen one) AF system are of no use to you.

EDIT: Also, the 760D is basically a 750D with a top display, isn't the 750D usually cheaper?

Additionally, I forgot to mention that if you scour used sites like ebay, you are likely to get minolta A mount lenses which should be cheaper, but I'm not sure of the range of lenses that's available.

Canon Rebels are widely used by youtubers and they are a good solution if you want to shoot FHD videos and have photo capabilities as well. I am not entirely sure how this sony's in video AF performs, but I know for a fact the 70Ds AF is widely praised by many. That of course depends upon what sort of videos you will be taking. The Canon also has the advantage of that flip touchscreen, which I don't believe is as good on the Sony.

Look for a used 70D or failing to find something like that, the 750/60D will serve you well, you can't go wrong. Also, Canon have their STM lenses which have silent AF to avoid it being picked up by the mic, which Minolta lenses certainly will perform far worse, and Sony's A mount can't be that much better i think.

I would get the Canon. Mainly because noone knows if sony A mount will survive.  Canon has better lens avalibilty and a brighter future as the Sony A mount seems to slowly be less focused on while the Sony E mount gets a priority.

I'm sure the A-mount will survive, at least for the foreseeable future.  Sony just released a new A-mount camera within the past year.  My feeling is they won't give it as much a priority as the E-mount.

For a beginner, the most important thing is to learn the techniques than worry too much about the tools.

I think it will survive. But I also think it is about to get a lot less attention. So personally I would go with Canon for just that reason and for the larger avalibilty of cheap used lenses. Like my buddy got a EF 70-200 f/4L for just over 300£ last week. Thats the main reason I would choose Canon, "cheap" lenses.

This falls under the category of what we like to call "Dumb Questions".  No camera is future proof, you can keep using the camera you buy today for the next 5, 10, 20, 100 years as long as:

  • the camera doesn't break or develop any faults
  • assuming you live 100 years or more
  • and your requirements of what the camera should do does not change

Essentially as long as the camera is capable of doing what you want, it's future proof.  The moment you need a feature the camera cannot support...

In the sense that it will perform the same in 10 years as today, yes, as long as it remains alive for that long. It won't magically start recording 4K and taking pics at 2ble the resolution if 8k TVs become a thing in the meantime though.

I believe however, longevity should also be examined. I have had my Canon 50D since 2008, when it came out, and it only started spewing errors out last year. My 50D was of course probably used more than average since it was used semi-professionally during that time as well. Canon lists their expected life to 50-150,000 actuations, depending on the model, a 1dx has a more durable shutter than a 1300d for obvious reasons.

As far as sonys are concerned, they haven't been around long enough to know how long their Shutter life expectancy is. Theoretically, since their mirror assembly doesn't move, they have one less point of failure, their shutter actuation life expectancy is another story.  I was not able to find anything about their mirrorless cameras or the a99/a68. This site lists stats of several cameras from different brands http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/

From what I see, they tend to vary between models and only their DSLRs are listed. Assuming their shutters are the same thing, the newest listed the a900 starts failing from anywhere between 10,000-100,000 actuations in significant numbers, quite inconsistent. However the a900 is an 8 year old camera and in the little months between  that and the others listed, they seem to have made it more durable. I'm sure, unless you get an outlier, your camera would survive over 15,000 actuations, which is more than enough for most over 10 years.

It is not possible for an e-mount lens to be mounted on a dslr, due to the csc's short flange distance, the reverse is possible because you just have to increase the flange distance, but you can't decrease it.

If you are looking at e-mount lenses, why not look at a mirrorless camera in the first place? You should be able to get most lenses you need from sigma, which are basically native with their adapter, and you could adapt a mount, EF, even FD lenses. They are unlikely to go away.

To be clear, I myself would take a Canon DSLR over a Sony mirrorless (perhaps not the a7 if I got a used one for like £200) any day, but its still an option you might want to consider.

I never suggested the contrary, there are csc's in your budget, like the a6000, unless prices in India are as unreasonable as I imagine. I wouldn't personally recommend the a6000, but still its an option that is within your budget. The a7 part was my own purchasing preference.

In your position, the most prudent thing to do is get a 70D, or failing to get a good deal on one the 760D/750D, especially since the budget is an issue and Canon lenses tend to be cheaper, new or used, but especially used.

What lenses do you need?  Just because Canon, Nikon, Sony all have dozens of lenses in their product lineup does not mean you need them all.  Most amateur photographers use lenses that fall between 18mm to 300mm focal range with usually wide angle zoom, medium zoom, telephoto zoom or prime lenses.  Longer and expensive lenses that have focal lengths over 200-300mm are specialist lenses.  Instead of looking at what they offer, look to see if they offer the lenses you need for reasonable cost.

A good photographer knows where to focus the lens, a bad photographer focuses on the wrong things.  A good photographer goes out to the world and tries to create something new, a lazy wannabe photographer goes to a museum to take photos of things people have photographed before. - Good Photography
