So I've got a ASUS G501-VW which comes with a 960M. I was wondering if I could replace the GPU with a 1050? Is it even possible to replace a laptop graphics card?

No you cannot with your laptop. Yes it is possible if it's an MXM gpu.

not really. there are plenty of old school Alienware's who receive pascal upgrades.

This is just a random example. There's actually tons of others. Some replacing the 980m core, some modding even older AWs to accept 1070s. End of the day, there are cool things you can do with MXM.
