how should i do it, should i use safe mode or does it not matter? 

i have the 378.49 WHQL drive downloaded

i get my new card hopefully tomorrow

Yeah just use safe mode, there is no harm in that. Though personally I did it without safe mode. Everything still works smooth

yes you should do it while in safe mode, it is very straight forward you tell it to clean the selected drivers and let it do its job

ok in that case i might do it now whilst i have my old gpu?

yes, you can, I would wait having the new one since it is quite fast process though, you reboot and start windows on safe mode, active the program tell it to clean all, it will delete everything and shut down, then all you have to do is install the new GPU, in most cases the generic driver will provide the new gpu already feeds video, if it does not then use onboard graphics and you will be fine, install the right drivers for the new GPU, reboot and your work is done, the new GPU should work perfectly.

i dont have an Igpu, i think i did the right one i clicked the first option, how do i know if it worked or not?

By the absence of nVidia control thingy, if you cant go to nVidia video options anymore then you are running on the generic drivers

in device manage it says this

yes, it was successful you already are on generic drivers, your PC is ready for any new GPU installation, I dont know which one you got but if its nVidia then just install it on the PCI-e, power it up, boot up download Geforce experience and let it do its job, reboot once it is done and you are good to go [:

i have manually downloading the driver from nvidia website so when i come back from college tomorrow all i need to do is swap le gpu and install new driver

I personally like using Geforce experience, but manually installing the driver provided you got the right one will be fine [:

i selelcted the correct gpu from the drop down list

 

i am waiting for evga 980 sc
