I wanna get some parts for a new build.

I want to re-use a (really) old power supply to save some money but it's an almost-9-year-old PSU (it's a stock 525W PSU from a Dell Studio XPS 9000).

Everyone has told me to purchase a new PSU but I don't understand why it's not safe to re-use this old PSU?

All the cables and connectors seem fine to me.

The components inside are probably worn out even though u cant see it. It's best to get a new psu unless you want ur rig to blow up.

yup caps will wear out especially in a oem psu, i am assuming they are not high-quality caps. OP get a good quality psu i think it will be worth it.

Might be going for a full ATX motherboard. Not sure yet.

Here is something I want to point out with your list:

Get a RX 480 4GB. It has been proven to be faster than a 1060 3GB in every game, plus DX12 and Vulkan makes it much better

i5 7500 is not worth the price increase, plus you need a BIOS update as some requires 6th gen CPU and not all board comes with one installed

Don't cheap out on PSU like people said, get a Corsair CXM instead.

Do you need 16GB of RAM?

But if you cheap out on other stuff you can get something better

Thanks for the tips!

I think I could do with just 8GB of RAM, but sometimes I'll exceed that (going up to around 9-10GB used).

Yeah unless you open lots of programs chrome tabs and programs at the same time then it would nice to have 16. Also do you have a monitor already? Beucase you can swap for RX 480 8GB instead for same price and get a freesync monitor (reduce screen tearing) for very cheap and it will make gaming very enjoyable.

I have a 1080p monitor that does support G-Sync. I'm not too sure about Freesync though.

Also, would it be wise to go for an AMD CPU to reduce the price by a little bit?

No. AMD cpu are horrible. If you have a sync then keep 1060 6gb it would be better.
