I have a somewhat old pc, and I want to upgrade it for low to mid range intensity games. Is an r9 380 going to be sufficient?

Yeah a 380 would suffice.  Anything more than that would definitely need a cpu upgrade.

Well normally it would be trash (probably compared to what he has im guessing high-end) but with that old a processor, it would pair quite nicely because it wont bottleneck

Yes. A new 380 would be best but its not bad to buy used (if you are planning to get a new rig all together soon then definitely get a used one)

I'd say get a 2gb one.  4gb might not be needed for you on that system..

There are good and bad bottlenecks say in the (Hopefully near)future he can get a CPU mobo upgrade and he won't pay for a GPU.Also I'm concerned about putting a very very hot GPU in a prebuilt case that appears to limited ventilation

honestly, it is the cheapest i can find where the ratings are not saying it dies after 90 days

xfx radeon 470 or 480 blower cooler would be fine in a small case
