Here are the specs:

  • Fractal Design Node 804 case
  • ASRock Z270 Extreme4 mATX
  • Kaby Lake i7 7700K
  • 2- Samsung M.2 NVMe 950 Pro (RAID 0)
  • EKWB Extreme 240 kit (SP pull from top of case)
  • 2 - front mounted 120 fans on the MB side (AF type pull)
  • 1 Rear mounted 120 fan on the MB side (AF Push)
  • 2 Top mounted 120 fans on MB side (AF Push)
  • AMD W4100 (programmer, not a gamer) (I'm an old fart)

I can OC the cpu to 5.0 GHz no problem. Running AIDA64 at 4.8 GHz the temperature spikes at 90 degrees C. However, stopping the test (idle) brings the temperature back to 35 degrees C in less than 2 seconds.

Is my pump running too fast? Case to friggin' small?

Thoughts?

sounds like a bad thermal connection between the cpu die and the waterblock.

the amount of heat that can be transferred depends on the temperature delta between the hot and cold side, if for example your thermal paste isnt making propper contact between the cpu lid and the cooler, you would have bad transfer in that spot, meaning you need a higher delta for the same amount of heat transfer.

so, what i'm guessing is the moment your cpu goes full tilt for aida64, your thermal output increases over what it is at stock, requiring a higher temperature delta -- this is why it spikes to 90 degrees. when you shut down aida64, the cpu's thermal output goes down, and because there is very little thermal mass, the temperature can come down really fast.

based on that last bit, however much i dislike mentioning it, it *MAY* be bad TIM underneath the lid, it is pretty much the most logical way to explain the very extreme speed at which temps rise and drop. however, i *DONT* recommend delidding until you have gone trough every other option in the book.

Replace the thermal paste and it's running much cooler. BTW: the app 'Core Temp' reports higher temperatures than Aida64

delidding - ("not going there")

thats exactly why it's pretty much the last option to consider, if you're in a position where delidding is a necessity for normal operation you have a pretty high chance intel will consider it a dud anyways and replace your processor :P

good to know, glad I didn't have to go there
