My disk usage on my laptop is almost always pinned at 100%, even while idling. Anything I can do? Should I reinstall windows?

Specs:

Windows 10

1tb 5400rpm HDD

Main Rig | Personal Build | Windows 10 | R7 2700x 3.7~4.3ghz | ASUS ROG Strix B450-I | 16gb DDR4 3200mhz | GTX 1080 FE | Coolermaster Elite 130 | Corsair H60 | WD Blue SN500 500GB NVMe SSD + 1tb WD Green HDD + 1tb WD Blue HDD

Laptop | HP m6-w102dx | Windows 10 | i7-5500u 2.4~3.0ghz | 8gb DDR3L | GT 930m 2gb| 120gb Sandisk SSD

Phone | Pixel 3 | Verizon | 64gb

ok well you can also go into task manager and hit "show more" orr something like that and a process that is using a lot of drive activity will be highlighted yellow under the drive column

i did that already and nothing really stood out.

then I would guess you have to many programs running check the startup tab of task manager and you might be able to stop some things BE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE STOPPING THOUGH.

open the resource monitor from windows (Run -> perfmon.exe). Switch to the Disc tab and sort by the overall disc usage. What is process is showing when at 100%. And at the bottom, which path?

Probably Windows Indexing the drive. you can turn that off in settings and I believe if you right click on the drive and select properties you can uncheck the the box that says something about indexing.

It is probably fixed once you have SSD. Processes like virusscanners or Windows checking for updates, updating etc, can cause disk usage. A HDD is not suiteable for multiple tasks at the same time. Indeed less processes could help, but it won't go entirely away.
