I'm building a graphics workstation to run Agisoft Photoscan on, details of exactly how it works aren't hugely relevant here -- just know that it's an utter memory hog, and does lots of mathsy rendery stuff.

I'm planning to go with the following parts (though alternative recommendations are welcome):

Asus Z10PE-D16 WS

Xeon E5-2640 V4 2.4GHz 10-Core  (one of -- followed by a second once money allows)

1070 graphics (maybe x2 if we can)

I will initially put 32GB of ram in it, followed by an upgrade to 128GB or even 256 once cash allows. (and before anyone says anything, yes this is actually necessary for what we are doing)

Does anyone have any recommendations on which ram to use? my go to for these things is Crucial, they have these 2 items:

Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2133 RDIMM -- CT7200197 -- DDR4 PC4-17000 • CL=15
Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-2400 RDIMM -- CT7200189 -- DDR4 PC4-19200 • CL=17

I'm not sure which would perform best.

Any other options RAM wise gratefully received. (I'm in the UK and subject to company approved suppliers list issues if that makes any difference.)

Also what's up with ram pricing at the moment it's gone up loads in the last few weeks?

The DDR4-19200 can probably be run de-rated to DDR4-17000 CL15 specs.  So basically you need to ensure compatibility with your board and your budget.  I wouldn't pay a lot extra for the higher-spec'ed stuff.  I'd probably also not buy an Asus board for a "workstation" either -- Supermicro generally has better boards in that segment.

RAM pricing has a lot of variables.  Foreign exchange can be a big one.

Hi,

I'd suggest neither of what you mentioned, if it's a serious graphics workstation you should get ECC memory, as great a capacity as your budget allows.

Those are ECC parts, aren't they?  RDIMM?

Yes they are I'm sorry.

I'm not hugely concerned on the ECC front, it's on the nice to have list, but isn't worth a lot of money for this project, the odd flipped bit isn't going to make a lot of difference to the output.

Are there products from other brands that anyone could recommend? The only reason I use Crucial is that the product finder garentees compatibility and I've had good support from them for years -- no issues with using other brands, just never tried.
