PI cluster server vs. Windows budget server?

Hello,

I would like to construct a home server for syncing photos, movie's, retro games etc. For my home theater. I'm looking at two options, either building a multi node raspberry pi server or a Windows Xeon CPU based machine. I don't have too much knowledge as far as any of this goes but enough to where I know how to set it all up. I'm unsure of which would be better. I'm looking at 500-700 dollars for something I'd stick in the study or my vacant under the stairwell closet. Please offer suggestions

Well my immediate concern would be how will you power all those Pi's? Is there a power brick with 20 or 30 or however many USB power slots? That's a lot of micro USB cables!

 

As for price to performance, I have no idea how well those Pi's would scale. I'd think it would be similar to SLI but maybe not, I have no idea.

Micro USB cables wouldn't be an issue. I'll either put it in a resourced PC case or build one. I don't think the scaling is bad. You set one up as a slave and then the rest act as singular physical compute core's.

Well I'd be running Linux most likely so I don't think I'd have much of an issue.

I already have around 20 TB in HDD's and 500 GB SSD. It's not Xeon based either

so it doesn't have to be, make your own random raid array then

you can do a Pi Custer but you are also limited to the network speed and your SD Card. You wont really be able to upgrade any parts but the SD Card. If you stay with a windows budget server, you have the available to upgrade any part of the server you want to at any time
