Fellow Techies,

I hope all are doing well. I am looking into getting an online backup service for my pc/external backup device ( I haven't decided to use a NAS or USB 3.0 external enclosure for two or more drives). Can anyone give me an idea which company to look at? I was looking at PCmag and saw something about " Explorer Integration" Can anyone give me a definition?

Thanks in advance.

I do not have a NAS setup. I have a Synology DS209 that my dad had setup before he died, but I haven't decided whether to use it or maybe save power and go with an external USB 3.0 enclosure....Hell now that I think about it, I'll just use what I have, I am going to use electricity with a good enclosure anyway.

Yes a have a NAS, and no I don't have anything on it yet.

Those where quick responses guys, thanks.

You can get a QNAP NAS and replicate to Azure - that's a very popular option with a lot of the customers I look after.

Can I use Azure with Synology? I have never heard of them before. I am looking at getting a couple of hdd's to clone my two Operating Systems and put them in a fireproof media safe. so I have the OS's saved. Thoughts? An FYI, the one OS that means the most is the Win 7 (it is stupidly expensive to buy a new legit key) so I want to have a clone of the OS drive so I have a fall back.

How much data?

A simple solution would be Crashplans cloud service; it's not the fastest but storage is unlimited. You could easily backup to your local NAS and the cloud from a single client on your computer.

Amazon now offers unlimited storage but it takes some work creating an automated data transfer solution.

Here are my experiences:

CrashPlan - Not a bad service but the network throttling is painful. When I started with them I was able to backup servers close to 100Mbps, about a year later I was getting less than 15Mbps on average. The software was pretty good but I recently ran into a bug which they couldn't resolve so that with the network slowness forced me to cancel my account and lose years of versioned backups (~300GB of older versions of personal backups). I was also informed by an acquaintance of mine that the ability to restore your data is disabled once a month for a few days depending on the amount of data you have, I've never tested this myself but he has support tickets from CrashPlan reps explaining why he had to wait 2 days before he could restore his data and other blogs have covered this in the past also.

Google Drive - So far so good for me. I've been backing up a few GB of data for the past month testing out the network speeds and reliability. Network performance isn't bad from my home connection but I haven't tested this from my servers yet. The cost is a bit pricey for 1TB and 10TB but I have the 100GB plan since I keep running out of space on my GMail account and I started backing up my pictures and videos to Google Photos. Some people have privacy concerns with Google holding their data so I make sure my NAS (Synology) encrypts my data before sending it to their servers so Google can't go snooping through my files and if they get hacked the hackers won't be able to do anything with my files either.

Amazon Drive - On par with Google Drive in terms of performance and stability. Price is much better than Google Drive so this is the one I will most likely be switching to for my personal backups (again, encrypted before transmission so Amazon can't access my files either).

hubiC - Network performance is slow and their support is pretty bad. Their pricing looked really good but attempts to pay for service were impossible for me and a few weeks after attempting to pay an invoice I was told there was a problem with their system and they asked me to pay the invoice then but by then the invoice was closed. Their support never got back to me so I went to their forums where current users warned people to avoid them because quite a few of them lost all of their data because of invoice issues (they'd go to renew their service and the invoice wouldn't get paid but support would take so long to respond their data would get deleted automatically before support could fix it).

The data will be system images, family photos, scanned reciepts, etc. So it could be 1tb or it could be four, I don't know yet.
