My brother wants to get a new graphics card, but his CPU is pretty crappy http://goo.gl/AjbnIJ he doesnt know what mother board he has but his socket is an AM3 if I am not mistaken. So if he wanted a AM3+ CPU would he need a new MotherBoard that supports that CPU?

AM3+ and AM3 are compatible with each other. I'm not entirely sure, but an AM3+ CPU might work in an AM3 socket with a BIOS update. I know for a fact though that AM3 CPUs work in AM3+ sockets.

That's news to me.

I had a Thuban CPU a couple years ago in an AM3+ socket. Even had a Deneb CPU in an AM3+ socket.

AM3 CPUs will work in both AM3 or AM3+ socket motherboards.

AM3+ will NOT work on an AM3 socket motherboard; only AM3+ motherboards.

AM3+ CPUs have extra 2 (or 1?) pins that supply more voltage / current to the chip...which AM3 sockets are missing.

If you physically trying to put a AM3+ processor into a socket AM3 motherboard, you will bend or break the extra 2 pins.

I'm running a AM3 (Phenom II X6 1090T) on a AM3+ motherboard (ASUS Crosshair V Formula).
