So, silly question:

How much functionality and ability will I lose by connecting a PS4 or PS4 Pro to a TV that only support HDMI 1.3?  From what I read, I figure I probably would not be able to see any increase in frames with the PS4 Pro, and I know I wouldn't get 3D.  The TV's not 4k, so that's not an issue.  Just verifying as I want one for a few console-exclusives.

Also Sony's kind of crap with their customer service so I don't want to ever speak to them if I can help it...

Just what's not covered in HDMI 1.3. All you really need is 1080p 60Hz, and that's what the standard provides.

Then I think my follow-up would be if there was reason at all to get the Pro version with this TV, specifically if the PS4 Pro will still deliver the downsampled 1080p at 60fps that it supposedly can on some games.  If not, there's no reason to pay the extra...I'm not replacing this TV until it gives out.

Some games look a bit better with the Pro, even if it's still output at 1080p.

Right now, the PS4 Pro is a wait for affair unless you have a 4K TV or at least one game that runs significantly better on the PS4 Pro.

Natively, no. There are games that could with an update, but who is playing first year titles enough for that to be worth it.

Most of the games are being ran at 1440p or custom internal resolutions (like 1800p 16:9), and are using pretty competent upscaling algorithms.

I will say this, The Last Guardian is actually playable on the Pro, and Infinite Warfare and World of Final Fantasy both look better. Unfortunately, I'm limited to 1080p due to my Razer Ripsaw.

so.. they run the game at higher than 1080 res and then upscale to 4K?

why the thunk can they not advertise 1080p60 on those things then...

Because the PS4 Pro is intended for 4K TVs primarily, and it's still using those internal resolutions, but just downscaling to 1080p. Not all games will run 60FPS either, I believe Last Guardian is locked at 30.

Certain games that can use the PS4 Pro's power will still offer higher quality graphics. For example, FFXV has two detail settings. The PS4 is stuck on the lower detail settings while the PS4 Pro can use the higher detail settings.
