need help choosing a power supply (buying tonight)

manlykeweaver465

my budget is £235 and im going to be buying a new gpu and powersupply for my pc as my psu is some old af crappy psu what has just blown after 3 years and my gpu just isnt cutting it anymore (gtx 750 1gb)

i was looking at a gtx 1060 3gb £190, but that would only leave me with £45 for a psu, and i know i cant have a good and cheap power supply so what should i do

buy a cheaper gpu such as a gtx 1050 ti or buy a used gpu which will give me more headroom when looking to buy a new psu

(if this is in the wrong topic please move to the correct one :) )

A cheap RX 480 4GB would outperform the 1060 in some games. A CX450M would be a decent PSU.

i hear people saying bad things about it and people convincing me to get a psu out the tier 2 or tier 1 and they are quite pricey

Pick from tier 3 above. Corsair CXM 550/450w will do just fine.

CXM GREY unit is not bad. the one that bad is the Green one.

Thanks, really want that 1060 haha

Why though? As I already said, the RX 480 can outperform it by quite a lot.

if i brought an rx 480 i would have £25 for a power supply so i would either have to go with a gtx 1060 3gb or rx 470 4gb

I'd pick an RM700x maybe even RM800x since the price difference is so low.

My thinking is I'd keep an RMx twice as long as a CM, which justifies the price rather well.

Actually it's got 10 year warranty.

You sure? I know it's one of the worst 480s, but it's still better than the 1060.

well i cant decide yet because the money what was supposed to be in my account from an amazon refund which was issued around 2 weeks ago and it said it would be 5-7 days and is not in my account, so i cant buy anything yet which is really annoying had so many problems with the products i ordered from amazon itself and not a 3rd party seller

So he has room for another 480 next year, should he pick one up.

Unless he goes for a 1060 to throw in the bin in two years.

Either way, if you're going for a PSU to keep for a decade, why not make sure it has room for cheap futureproofing

You only need a tier 1 or 2 power supply if you are into heavy overclocking or your electrical power is very, very, expensive.(And even then, the word "need" is debatable).

For the average user a basic 80+ bronze power supply such as the Corsair CX550M is more than adequate. A CX450M would also be "enough" if you are on a really tight budget, but the extra headroom of the 550M is worth the extra cost (if any - sometimes, because of sales, etc, they are almost the same price).

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.
