My new Steam Link is acting up... help?

I picked up a Steam Link for cheap on the last day of the Winter Sale. It arrived yesterday, and I've been trying to set it up but I'm having a LOT of issues.

 

First off, it's really bitchy about the Xbox One controller I want to plug in. When plugged in during initial setup, the controller simply refuses to work until I set up the device using some other peripheral.

 

Secondly, my main issue: this thing won't recognise my computer, no matter what I do. I've made sure both are on the same WiFi network, tried different WiFi networks, tried my PC being wired or wireless, checked firewall permissions, 2.4GHz networks, 5GHz networks, you name it: this piece of crap won't do it. It detects my PC, but no matter what I do, it sees it as offline and displays either "Host Computer Offline, make sure it is switched on and Steam is running" (both of which are true) or "Steam offline (which it isn't), sending Wake On LAN request..." which does nothing.

Checked, no.

 

I'm fed up with the input issues and connectivity problems, I've just filed a return request. Thanks for the help, both you and @ItsJoshuaS
