Haswell-E vs Broadwell-E

Considering a X99 platform but not well versed on the differences between them. I've seen a lot of people on this forum say Haswell-E is better for the money and can overclock higher, but every review I've seen has the Broadwell-E counterpart beating the Haswell-E CPU by a considerable margin. 

 

CPU I'm considering is the 6850k. Mostly due to the number of lanes over the 6800k.

At this point I would wait for VEGA. It might not be more powerful but will drop prices. Also why do you need the extra lanes? Broadwell-E is better by about 10%-15%

Two 980ti and I need a bunch of storage.

 

Ryzen is rumored to be 500 US, I can get a 6850K for just over that. And Ryzen only has 2 channel memory verses the X99's 4. 

 

But Ryzen is still an option, if AMD would freaking lock in the pricing that is. Not REALLY pressed for time but the clock is ticking.

X99 will run in dual channel if you only have two sicks in the assigned slots on the same side of the CPU.

 

Personally, I would advise going with X99 only if you want to use the whole PCIe lanes provided. SLI can use 8x/8x will little, if any, degradation and still allow for a 4x NVMe drive on most mainstream boards.

 

Really helps her out in Adobe Suite and AutoCAD. The only issue for me was the 4-stick kits cost like $200 each for 32GB 2400MHz/15.

Broadwell-E is sightly better clock-for-clock, but it still can't OC close to where Haswell-E ended. What this means is that even though Broadwell-E is technically better, it can be overcome by a late production Haswell-E chip pretty regularly. As evidence: my 5960X that sits at 4.7ghz everyday and that I have pushed to 5.0ghz on all cores with just water cooling.

 

But at this point, I'd probably go with Broadwell-E anyway just because it's newer. And if you camp out on SiliconLottery's site you can generally pick up highly binned versions that will OC like champs. Although with RyZen so close it really might be worth waiting like a month to see what happens.

CPU I'm considering is the 6850k. Mostly due to the number of lanes over the 6800k. 

 

To be honest, if you are going to splurge for a 6850k simply because of lanes, then you might as well go with one of the 8 core BWE or HWE variants.  Otherwise, stick with the 6800k or 5820k.

 

If you are this late in the game to x99, you might want to consider waiting for Skylake-X (LGA 2066) which is due the second half of this year. I starting getting bored with my 5960x / x99 setup so I picked up a Kaby Lake / z270 to hold me over until Skylake-X drops.

I'm giving AMD at least a week to announce pricing. If it's competitive I'm definitely holding out until Ryzen launches if only to hopefully save a few bucks on X99.

Kabylake is another consideration, but I'm not going to wait until Skylake X, to then wait until Ryzen+, and so on. Always something 6 months away.
