i7 upgrade

Go to solution Solved by Gonio,

Just OC a bit further. Saves you the money that imo is not worth the upgrade, or better spend it then on a decent cooler (not sure what you have). Would even go as far that the upgrade to new platform is not actually worth it.

hey,

so I currently have an i5 4690k in my PC i was thinking of maybe upgrading to the i7 4790k since from what I can tell there really isn't that much difference in performance but my only problem is i would of thought that since its now there or four years old i would of thought it was cheaper than skylake but on amazon its currently £340 ish and the 6700k is £315 my only problem is that its a different socket so that would mean new mobo and new ram since I'm on ddr3 still and i might end up sacrificing my m.2 slot which isn't cool  (i don't like PCIe adapter)

any advice? maybe somewhere i can get the 4790k cheaper?

I lurk a lot

Well even though its 2 generations old now, CPUs hold their prices fairly solid and really dont depreciate that much honestly.

If you can sell it for a good price go for it but usually you can't get much money from your old system. better of using it a NAS / HTPC / Overkill Router / Game server. I still think you should hold off upgrading and wait a few month.

if you're planning an upgrade to skylake, or kaby lake, wait for Ryzen as it might offer similar value for a cheaper price, so I suggest waiting for that before you buy anything as it's only a month or two away at the moment, and even if Ryzen isn't as good as intels line up, intel might still lower prices slightly to compete better

that's fair enough, I don't prefer either side personally and just go with who ever has the best CPU/GPU I can afford

that's mainly because they haven't had a big CPU launch for years now, so all of their CPUs are outdated and crap. and GPU side they are currently competing in the value end rather than the high end enthusiast grade level

yeah i mean i think they waited a bit to long for zen though tbh although it beats intel taking a not out of apples book and releasing very small incremental updates year upon year

the latest CPU launch practically nothing has changed at all, especially if you overclock

true but at the same time, meh, I mean very few internet connections, especially here in Scotland, will be good enough anyways to stream 4K anyways.
