I3 i5 or i7???

Spudbilly

I recently acquired a extremely cheap Ivy bridge system and threw some parts of my own into it. See my profile rig for details...But basically it includes

I3 3220

Gigabyte ga-b75m d3h

16gb ddr3 1600

Crucial 64gb ssd

1tb WD blue HDD

R9 270x

Thermal take 550w bronze 80+

I do casual gaming, heavy productivity, Photoshop, InDesign, light duty premiere work.

Question is..Will the i3 be good enough. I have been scouring Craigslist and eBay for a cheap i5 like a 3470, but undecided whether the upgrade within the same architecture is worth it for what I do????

Thoughts????

An i5 would be better, especially for games like GTA V and BF1 if you play them. Would speed your editing up a bit too.

I'd say that if you can, grab the i7 3770 or something, because then you'll never have to worry. If you plan to upgrade the platform then stick with the i5 so you don't waste money

Actually I'd say try to upgrade mobo and go to most recent gen cpu. If you can't afford that wait and save till you can unless you just really need something now.

then you could relegate the old system to nas/server duty :)

Build: Intel S2600gz, 2x E5-2670, EVGA SC 1070, Zotac 1060 6GB mini, 48GB Micron 1333mhz ECC DDR3, 2x Intel DPS-750XB 750 watt PSU

I play bf4, star Trek online, elite dangerous, lol and civilization games. It is my understanding that an i7 does not yield huge gains over an i5 especially with my 270x GPU.

There is almost no difference between old and new intel cpus. He already has 3rd generation compatible MoBo, so getting a newer cpu will mean replacing the MoBo and maybe RAM. If you are in college, stick with the core i3 or i5. If you are gonna make a living out of it, get the core i7.

It will be a pain to edit with an i3. Get an i5 at least preferably an i7.

The Adobe site lists some pretty low specs for the program's I use. I don't use Adobe premiere enough to justify an i7.

I've used an i3 4150 for editing. For 30 fps 1080p editing, it was okay... but for editing videos in 60 fps it wasn't easy. I would recommend getting an i5.

Work. My wife does graphic work with Photoshop and InDesign as well as maybe a couple other Adobe program's for marketing and I use Photoshop and premiere for promotional content for a large youth program and social media publications. I also like gaming.

I would strongly recommend getting an i7.

Yeah...its just hard to justify paying what people are asking for an i7 3770. The I5's are more in my price range

preferably $100 CAN or less. I find most on ebay for the $150 CAN range. I got the computer system for under $50 and would really love to keep the cost super minimal.
