As long as you don't visit dodgy websites and I mean seriously obscure stuff; you should be fine. I don't even have the windows one on and haven't had a virus since I got a little to curious when I was 16.

Nope. After switching to ESET, it was catching things Windows Defender never did.

compared to commercial solutions, Windows Defender is utter shit

if you have something to protect I recommend a payed AV, not a free one

Is it catching real threats or just shouting about every minor PUP or similar to try and justify its existence?

Personally I just run whatever is provided by Windows as I find the commercial ones too naggy at best, and they never find anything that really requires action.

Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Nah. It's legit. It's not intrusive either.

I think you should get another antivirus, If you don't want to pay you could get Avast free.
