I'm helping my friend build his first gaming computer. His budget is set to around 420$

I'd rather get a few opinions before me and him decide to push the "Pay now" button.

I'm giving him an old case, PSU, keyboard and mouse.

I chose the i3-6100 (117$) and GTX 1050ti. (135$)

Would there be any significant bottleneck I'd have to worry about, or is this a decent match up?

Decent matchup in my opinion. There may be a GPU bottleneck in some GPU intensive games and a CPU bottleneck in some CPU intensive games but nothing significant should be seen in games today.

TLDR: Go for it!

Make sure the power supply is at least 300W for the GPU. (recommended power supply for that graphics card is 300W minimum)

If 470 price is not far ahead maybe grab that instead but your combo will do good in majority of games out there there's.
