Hi Guys,

I seem to be in a bit of a dilemma. I have just purchased an R9 280x for my rig, and as you may know this card draws about 220 watts. My PSU is rated for 400 watts, and doing a quick calculator online my rig is set to draw about 413 watts. Would it be okay to run my computer like this for a few weeks until I can get a new PSU.

My rig is:

i5-6400

3x 100gb HDD

R9 280X

1x Optical drive

8gb DDR4 RAM

Gigabyte H170-HD3

Thanks in Advance,

Cheers.

Maybe. What PSU is it? Depending on how good it is, it might be good enough to run everything permanently (though I wouldn't recommend that), be good enough to run on for a little while, or not even be worth taking the risk of trying.

I would trust that to use for a few weeks (though maybe don't put both the CPU and GPU under full load at the same time if you can avoid it) but definitely not permanently.

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if anything on my current system seems like a large bottleneck for gaming performance.

I play games like Fallout 4, Beam.ng Drive, Watchdogs. Although I would like to know what would bottleneck my system playing even higher end more demanding games.

EDIT: How would VR Run?

Thanks in Advance

I don't see anything that would bottleneck your system if you are playing at reasonable settings. However, if you are looking to do any upgrades, consider getting a boot SSD, as it will make your system feel much more responsive.

Drive speed has very little to do with performance. Evidence can be seen when comparing similar densities, read heads, buffer, with only speed being the difference.

@KillerGamingBro I would get a new GPU for VR. Your CPU may not have the clocks needed, but the issue is the 280X. Run the SteamVR benchmark and see what you get. If you're on the low end of the green, you may not get good performance in most VR games.

If you are on the low-end of the green, consider getting a Rift since they have a technology (can't remember the name at the moment) that will help you out.

Depends if you can find one at a good price and your PSU is enough for the two of them (which it isn't). I would get a 480 4GB if you can. Used market can be good as well with 970 or 980 being another good choice.
