Hello,

I'm finally getting around to building a PC that can run games decently, and replace my consoles in the future. I'm just making this as a "log" of sorts to get my PC together.

What I have in mind:

  • i5k processor
  • $500 price range
  • worry about GPU later
  • size isn't an issue.

I have some questions as well.

  1. There is a website I know of that has "solutions" in it's name that shows the best pc build for each price range. What was the website's name/link?
  2. What I plan on doing is buying the parts at a local computer store and paying the people there $80 to build it + get a 1 year warranty on the computer with support. Is this a good deal? I've never built a PC and I don't have a big selection of tools.

Not worth it imo. $80 for putting together a lego puzzle is kinda steep and individual parts already have misc warrnties on them with some components like ram being lifetime.

As for tools, all you really need is a phillips head screwdriver.

Okay putting together a PC is crazy easy and enjoyable/rewarding, please do not pay anyone to build your first PC.

Edit: I second what the guy said below me, wait for Zen.

GPU: XFX RX 7900 XTX

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D

Your budget is too small for an i5 processor at all, let alone an overclockable i5. Wait for Zen if you want a cheap, overclockable quad-core.

I'll probably have to save up a little more than I suppose. An I5 processor is lowest I'm willing to go. I don't really plan on doing any over clocking until later down the line, so I'm still not 100% on which processor to get.

Still, isn't $250-$300 enough to buy the rest of the build though?

No. No it isn't. Besides, I don't know why you're so insistent on a Core i5 processor. Bragging rights? A core i3 with a GTX 1050 will perform better than a Core i5 6400 with a piece-of-junk R7 250.

If you can't wait, then $500 is a very difficult budget to work with. This is the best I can do. If you want a serious PC gaming experience, you'll need to raise that budget by a bit. Since you're a newcomer to PC gaming, it's a logical assumption that you don't have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or Windows key. You need all of those to game. I included them in the build below.

Bundles are his other choice. He can land a K-chip. However, call this a console transitioner stereotype, but he won't be satisfied with used products.

Or, you know, just waiting for Zen. AMD's already shown us what their architecture is capable of, and cheap quad-cores have been the trend with Excavator, Bulldozer, and all the APUs.

lower end-zen cpus seems to be released at roughly march. that's a pretty long time to wait for something. and who knows when bristol ridge is going to be on sale for us.
