I have a older version of SEAGATE HDD ST1000DM003, and it has a lot of complains under review about dying in a short period of time. I did not initially go with WD because Carey Holzman(a very experienced technician on YouTube) saying the SATA connector does not have locking mechanism. I am curious about what would you recommend.

All hdd's are about the same reliabllity wise. The segates aren't any worse, its just a circle jerk.

Just keep backups and your fine. No reason to switch drives if it works.

How long is a typical life circle for a HDD?

Is it true that it does not have locking mechanism, and the cable can detach easily?

The locking mechanism is on the connector. If the SATA cable's lock is flimsy, it won't catch firmly, but that's an issue with the cable not the drive.

If you're looking for recommendations, can you tell us what your use case is? Storage for documents/music? Gaming? Recording?

Multi-usage, I use it for gaming and video download/play in Windows, but I will also install a Linux system on it.

If your current drive is working fine, i wouldn't touch it,

If you need more space or its failing, Id get whatever cheap 4tb drive you can get and

BACK IT UP

Go with any HDD, then. I can recommend WD, Seagate, HGST (subsidiary of WD), Toshiba, and Hitachi (subsidiary of WD).
