I currently have EVGA GTX 970 gpu. I want to upgrade but not sure what to upgrade to. I was considering a 1060, 1070, or 1080. Im just not sure if it is good to buy a 1060 (now currently probably the same price I bought 970 at) or I should save up to buy a 1070. I want good gaming (Not super or the "Best"). Probably leaning a little towards cost effective. The primary use of the gpu will be gaming. Games on high settings that I play: Rainbow 6, battlefield, and subnautica,

Upgrade to the 1070 as it make more sense because you're already on a '70' GPU.

Well if you go with the 1060 you get less CUDA Cores than the 970 you already have and the 1060 is classed as 'Mid-Range' while your 970 is classed as 'High-End'. If you go with the 1070 you get more CUDA Cores than your 970 and is in the same class.

A 1060 is at 980 level. You don't compare gaming experience with CUDA cores.

Yeah I know but it's still classed as 'Mid-Range' it wouldn't make no sense to upgrade from a GPU that was classed as 'High-End' to a GPU that is classed as 'Mid-Range'.

Ok... it's like saying I would not upgrade an FX 8350 with same clock (4.0 GHz) to an i7 6700k to get less cores

LOL a 970 is not high end. It's midrange. As is the 1070. We just haven't seen the high end from AMD or Nvidia yet so it throws things off.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

That' is a horrible list and it should feel bad. A 960m is a 750ti. Great little GPU, I've got one. But come on.

No it's not. You base a cards standing by the resolution it can hold 60fps at. The 970 can't do that at 1080p, makes it a lower end card.

Yes it is,

60 Cards are classed as mid-range

70 Cards are classed as high-end

80 Cards are classed as high-end

You base a cards standing based off performance, not a tag on the box. The 970 was a mid range card, now it's a lower end card. My 980ti was a high end card, now is a mid range card. Such is the circle of tech Simba.

It doesn't matter if they are old and beaten by newer GPU'S they still are classed the same.

No...

Try selling a 780ti as a high end card. Give it a shot. Computer parts are like cars, they are classified by their performance not the manufacturer. Chevy can't call a Sonic a sports car and be take seriously, or better yet a truck. Chevy can put any label they want on the Sonic, it's their car. Doesn't change the reality of the Sonic's performance.

If you're on a 1080p 60 Hz monitor there is no reason to upgrade yet from the 970. I have a 970 myself, one completely incapable of any overclock, and it's still awesome for graphically intense AAA games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex Mankind Divided. And especially Battlefield 1, I was pulling mostly 75 fps on the open beta at 1080p ultra and my worst dips were into the low 60s. I mean I would never buy a 970 today given the existence of the slightly more powerful RX 480 and GTX 1060, but it's still a high quality 1080p gaming card if you already have it. I so badly wanted a 1070 or 1080 when I saw them launch and saw how huge the gains in performance were, but my 970 does such a great job still I had to slap myself and ask if it was worth it to spend $400-$600 just to change a couple of settings from high to ultra and to have high benchmark numbers. Meh, I'd rather put that money into gaming instead of new and unneeded hardware.
