$3000 New Build (First Time DIY)

Newbie here, always bought Dell systems and decided to custom build my first PC. Looking for feedback on the components selected and any recommendations for modifications within my $3000 (taxes in) budget. NCIX staff helped in selecting the components.

System will be used for Sony Vegas Pro 14, MS Office, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, StarCraft II, Skyrim.

Here is the system link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/dNmHpb

Any feedback is much appreciated.

get a cheap 30 bucks window key(https://www.kinguin.net/category/19429/windows-10-professional-oem-key/). do you need 64 gb ram? 32 would be enough.

Thanks for the link re: Windows OS. I tend to be borderline OCD with having 100's of tabs open on Chrome and was concerned about memory with running various video/photo editing software.

The only nitpicky things I could find "wrong", is maybe buy cheaper ram, because ram is ram is ram is ram, but that ram seems pretty cheap. Also, are you absolutely sure you want a FULL tower case? Those things are f***ing enormous, and my friend once made the mistake of getting one instead of a midtower case, and I never let him live it down, because it's as tall as his desk, and about the length of it. One more thing, if you're doing lots of editing and such, or ever want to stream, I would suggest getting a 6800k or a 6900k.

Jesus that computer is all kinds of overkill. You don't need more than 16GB RAM if you don't edit 4K video (in that case you only need 32). With your budget you should also get a monitor upgrade.

You're paying too much on:

Storage (unless you really need 6TB)

Case

PSU

Windows (Home is fine)

Wireless card

Even your USB 3.0 reader thingy

That 1070

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

I think the RAM is warranted, depending on how heavy your editing is.

he has the same problem with me on chrome tabs i have minimum of 80 tabs open in google chrome and that uses lots of ram so 64 gb is justified.

Thanks for the feedback. I was planning on using the 1.0TB for the Windows OS and other programs installed, 3TB to store all my data (lots++ of video and photo files), and the additional 3TB as backup for my data.

I had the full tower case given to me as a gift from a friend and I know how massive it is. Actually, I like the fact that I can keep a case around for years and it will be able to grow with my needs.

Why the 6800K or 6900K for the video editing?

Starcraft really isnt demanding. Plus if you are playing at a high level then it'll be better to play it on the lowest, 'blockyist' settings. I find myself more capable of beating lower level masters with low settings vs all max and beautiful, bloody gameplay.

I'm not 100% versed in Canadian pricing, but I guess your budget is around $2,300-$2,500?

For starters I don't think you need to be spending as much on a z170 board.

Also, I really think 64GB of memory is overkill.

So, maybe cut the memory in half and go to the cheapest x99 platform that you can? This would allow you to use 4 sticks of memory better than 2 sticks, incase you ever want to add another 32GB for the fun of it, or if you actually do need it, somehow.

I didnt really change much else. This is just to communicate my thought process

The next area I would modify is the case. If, you want a monster-sized case, then go for that one. It leaves you a lot of room to expand. You obviously chose it for a reason. If it were me, I'd just stick to a mid tower. Almost all good ones accommodate 2 HDDs and at least 2 SSDs. If I was allotting that amount of currency towards a case, then I would go for a very sexy mid tower. Also, a 1TB SSD is pretty huge, if you're not a massive gamer, and even then, I think that is kind of overkill. Maybe a 250GB 960 evo and then a 500GB 850 evo could be better. Or just a huge M.2 SSD and the 2 HDD you chose.

Thirdly, your PSU. I think 850W is seriously overkill. Unless you plan to add a second 1070 in SLI, 650W are perfectly adequate.

This is what I would personally do, including the first modifications I made. (I changed to windows 10 home too btw, forgot to mention(you can always buy massively cheap keys online, but I bought the $119USD version for myself for piece of mind))
