I want to do gaming and content creation and I am just wondering what cpu to get for my Z170X Gaming 6 mobo. I plan on getting a msi twin frozr gaming X 1070 video card if that helps. Basically what I am asking is do I really need a I7 6700k?

Get i7 6700k,it will help in content creation over the i5

The i7-6700k is best in the market for any Z170 motherboard for the purpose of gaming and content creation.  I personally bought a 6700k two weeks ago despite the discussion of the upcoming processors by both AMD and Intel.  You don't need a 6700k but if you're getting a good video card then you should get a good processor(6700k) rather than have performance problems down the road.

the i5 6400 would push that 1070 just fine. if you have the money then yeah a 6700k but that's not always a option. for gaming you dont need anything more than a i5-6600k but any skylake i5 would work well with a 1070.
