Is this RAM compatible with Z170?

Omie

I have an ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming Aura mobo and was wondering if this RAM is compatible with the Z170 series motherboards:  https://m.newegg.com/Product/Index?itemNumber=N82E16820232233

This is the only CAS 15 latency, 3200Mhz, 16GB RAM I could find in this brand and color but it doesn't say anything about compatibility with Z170.

The other RAM sticks says Z170 compatible: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231977&cm_re=g_skill_3200mhz_16gb_ripjaws_v-_-20-231-977-_-Product but the timing is pretty high and has a CAS latency of 16.

Quit looking on Newegg, and look at the QVL list.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

The QVL list for my motherboard sucks. It keeps listing 4x4GB versions rather than 8x2GB which is stupid.

Well that list is ALL of the approved sticks of RAM.  Anything not on that list, you cant guarantee will work.  And if it does work, you don't know what kinds of problems it might, or might not have.

Yes, it'll work fine. It's DDR4 and not ECC, so you're good.

Ok thanks.

ECC will work in nearly every board, but ECC won't be active depending on chipset. You're likely thinking of registered/buffered RAM.

The QVL only shows RAM that the manufacturer has tested themselves.

So the ram will work regardless even though it doesnt say anything about Z170 compatibility?

Which is the list of RAM that is known to work.  Anything else is unknown at best.

If your board supports DDR4 RAM, it can take any DDR4 with few issues, if any. Z-boards can take overclocked RAM so make sure the BIOS has support for the speed you're looking at.

Hmm I actually looked into it more and I don't think the 3200Mhz with CAS 15 comes with a heat spreader.

The specs under Newegg don't mention a heat spreader at all where in the CAS16 ram it says there is a heat spreader.

It's on their website. I would give them a call to find out. You could also call them to find if the motherboard is compatibility tested.

Never use ram that isn't on the QVL. Your just asking for random issues that stick there ugly heads out when you least expect it. Blue screens, Random crashes, corrupt data and registry are all things you may look forward to having with the incorrect ram installed. I've built a lot of PC's and the wrong ram can cause a hell of a lot of issues that can drive you crazy trying to diagnose. But most issues with PC random crashes I've found have been with incorrect ram configurations.

The problem is the QVL for my mobo all uses 4x4gb sticks of RAM. And I really don't wanna buy that combo incase of future upgrades.

I would stick with the 4x4gb sticks better to have ram that works then ram that will give you issues.

Go back to 2666mhz and go with 32 gb of Kingston HX426C15FBK4/32(XMP) 4 x 8 gb sticks. Or G.SKILL F4-2666C15Q-32GRR(XMP).   You will not even be able to tell the difference in speed when gaming.

Eh I'm just gonna probably get the 15-15-15-35 rating 2x8GB one. I'm sure it'll be compatible as it's a popular RAM.
