290x Or gtx 780

Daannnyy

780 at the moment for anything under 4k but the 290x will be better when non reference coolers come out (if it is similar price to the 780). However the 780ti is coming

Whatever costs less will be better. They perform pretty much the same.

wait for non-reference 290x, by that time i think 290x will have a price drop due to recent price drop of gtx780 and/or release of gtx 780ti

If you want to buy it now then gtx 780 would be a *slightly* better choice

Went with the 780 recently myself, was facing the same choice. Based on what benchmarks are out there the factory OC on the MSI Gaming I bought beats or matches the R290X and pushes past when you start over clocking. Running stable on mine at 1067/1119 on the GPU and 6608 effective on memory.

Can we make a pinned thread for articles like this?

With general questions like this, pitting two cards against each other in each tier and leave the specific stuff to be answered in a thread.

This question, along with others in different price ranges get's asked a lot. As well as asking about previous gen over now current gen.

Nonreference R9-290x's will have much better performance.  Someone on the forums water blocked his R9-290X and he got 14% OC (core and memory) and kept temps under 40*C.  The issue with the R9-290X is although some people have seen 1100MHz OC on the core, it throttles back to below 900Mhz constantly.  So we should see much higher and consistent performance.  an OC'ed R9-290x should be on par or slightly faster than an OC'ed GTX 780 at 1080p, but win as AA and resolutions go up.

Well when the 780Ti comes out, it will only be $700 which isn't much more than the 780 now. How do you think the 290x will compete against it?

780, specially with the price drop

290x maybe later when we can see the non reference cards. Dont even mention the waterblock, since it cost more $$, and you can overclock the 780 without it

lol, a year ago I actually had the red screen of death multiple times. They have redeemed themselves since then, and I have no issues with their drivers.

If anything, they are just slow, but the quality is there.

For 1440p or lower resolutions you will want the Nvidia GeForce GTX 780, it will perform better at those resolutions. If you game higher than those resolutions or on a triple monitor setup or more, the AMD Radeon R9 290X will perform better.

There's no aftermarket cooler right now. Reference or stock coolers for the 290x are bad and loud. Looks cool though.

Aftermarket coolers will be quieter, better, and allow for higher overclocks.
