Which M.2 Drive?

Afternoon Guys & Gals!

 

I'm looking at picking up an M.2 SSD this xmas just wondering what would be a decent one to get?

 

I have an MSI Z170 Krait Gaming Mobo

 

I can't seem to find out if it supports NVME drives or not......

Why go for an M.2 that offers 530R/500W. When you can get MUUUCH faster M.2 SSD's like the Samsung 950/960 that offer 2000+?

It supports M.2 formfactor with the most common lengths. It should support NVMe as well.

 

MX300 aren't NVMe drives, but SATA drives using the M.2 formfactor. The most common NVMe drives are the Samsung 950 and 960 series, but you also have the Intel NVMe drives (not necessarily using the M.2 formfactor though). Your board will support the Samsung 9xx ones (the 2280 size).

 

That being said, you'll only benefit from NVMe speeds in very specific scenarios, so there's no point in getting an NVMe drive for gaming or fast OS

is m.2 a form factor or connection?

The AData one in the ad on this very page (top right) is very decent. Click on it.

 

It's available in both SATA and M.2 format.

Form factor. You have 2 different types of connections on M.2 (I think it was 2 at least, might be 3)

Depends what you want to do with it. I'd go with a 1TB Evo.

Price, the fact that the speeds don't affect much in day to day use, and heat.
