Free Music Making Software?

Can someone point me to some good, free software for making music? I want to start making my own beats to songs and be able to combine them with my own rhymes since I don't have my own instruments to play piano, drums, etc.

A link to a community of hip-hop heads would be cool too if anyone's got one.

fruity loops free studio is good i believe, never used it but i hear thats where a lot of people start.

Just to elaborate. I make EDM and have for a while now. I started with reaper and used some free VSTs until i got some money and now I use FL studio, still with free VSTs. If I were you i would learn a little, buy a DAW, but not buy VSTs for a while. There is a lot you can do with free/included VSTs

Yeah, I though reaper looked really good. Btw what does VST stand for?

I don't know what it stands for but its the format for plugins. If you search best free VSTs you'll find some good ones.
