So I have decided that my laptop (with a E1-6010 @ 1.35GHz)can not game, unless it is FTL: Faster Than Light. My friend who has built his own and I came up with this build- https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Q2826X. Do you think that it is good for some gaming: Ex. Civilization VI, Beam ng.drive at 1080p and maybe 1440p. I plan to use Linux and already have a keyboard, mouse and display. Thoughts? Thanks.

1080p yes i will do fine

1440p no not really

if i were you i whould drop the 480 and get a 1060 instead

The 1060 and the 480 perform so close after recent driver updates, there's no point in going for one over the other.

Give me a while and I'll see if I can get a 1070 in that budget. Also, would you mind a non-overclockable CPU?

Keep the 480, get a cheaper case or ram, and up it to the 8GB edition. They perform pretty much the exactly same after recent driver updates.

They perform the same now.

I would'nd mind a non overclockable cpu if it is as fast or better than the 6600k.

Well, it wouldn't be as fast as the 6600k, but you really won't notice the difference in gaming uses. Maybe 3-6 FPS gone, but that's balanced by the fact that there's a 1070. And of course, pcpp is being slow xD

Thanks, I can live with that as anything recent is faster than my laptop. I just use it as an alternative for the school laptops.

Actually, that's a good reason to drop the 1060 in favour of the 480. At launch, the 1060 had a 12% lead at 1080p. That lead has been reduced to 2% with driver updates, and the 1440p lead has disappeared entirely.

Just hook him up with the Micro Center deal where the 6600k is $160 with the purchase of a compatible motherboard. Say hello to that 1070 in the build for me.

Yeah, pcpp appears to be dead, so here's a typed out version:

CPU - i5-6500 (Performance will be fine)

Heatsink - Stock heatsink will be fine

Motherboard - Cheapest that supports the CPU and DDR4, as well as having all the features you want and maybe even the right colour scheme

RAM - Any kit of 8GB DDR4 (16GB is nice to have, but not necessary)

SSD - Adata SP550 120GB (Nice, cheap and fast enough)

HDD - Whatever 1TB drive that is the cheapest that isn't dodgy (So basically, Seagate or WD)

GPU - The cheapest GTX 1070 you can find, will most likely be the mini from Gigabyte

Case - Whatever you want

PSU - The one you chose, or a CX450/550M (MUST be grey label)

Other parts are up to choice, and if going off of the lowest priced object in each category, should total around $900-950.

Thanks, will try to price out when pcpp is back up.

If I recall correctly, the PNY CS1311 is $3-$5 cheaper. Also, I think it's important to emphasize that it should be a 7200RPM HDD. Otherwise, load times for applications and games installed on the HDD are gong to be painful.

The CS1311 was what I originally had. Any ssd really is better than a hdd right?
